Is it considered uncourteous or taboo to jokingly talk/shout/comment on things during play with your opponent in competitive play? A lot of people seem to be upset with this type behavior when it happens, though when I play I usually keep in context that it is a game be it whether i'm playing competitively or not. Just wondering what everyone thought.

I don't see any issue as long as it isn't maliciously harrassing the other person, but one really should be more concerned with playing the game.

Shoot, talking to your opponent might not even matter if they have headphones in during a game.

It'll depend on the person you're playing, but typically speaking I wouldn't comment much, if at all during a match, and I certainly wouldn't shout. When you're in a match, you need every bit of concentration you can get, and for some people their opponent trying to talk to them (ESPECIALLY shouting never be that person) during the match can throw them off their game and be seen thus as super rude. Between sets, this isn't as much of, if at all an issue.

So yeah, it's rude as hell and taboo if you don't know who you're fighting, but for a reason that can be hard to understand or know exists until it happens to you.

Note that this does not apply to casual matches: only to tournaments or other forms of "serious" play where prestige, experience, or even prizes are on the line.

Some kids take their sets sooooooo serious. Be prepared to get a cold shoulder and encounter some ragers.

But yes, you're right. We're playing a party game and I'd like to think most people recognize that.

Typically if I'm playing someone I don't know I just keep quiet. It helps everyone concentrate. Although if something extraordinary happens like a clutch tech, hard read, or stage jank (looking at you lylat) I will probably laugh about it a bit or say something about it.

If I'm playing someone I know, however, I often am pretty vocal in the match. If I take a hard hit I exclaim "GAH!" or something of the sort, If I live the hard hit, I say "we livin'!", and if someone makes a mistake I laugh about it, and other stuff like that. I still try my best to win but I don't have to be afraid that the person will be offended or angry at me. Nothing distracting just fun interactions. And of course I pop off if I win a game I had no business winning, or absolutely style on my opponent.

In casual play I am probably the loudest person in the venue. I say "falcon kick!" or "backslash!", or any vocal outbursts that the chacter I am playing says when I execute certain moves, I announce the combos I'm doing as I do them, such as "ding, dong" when doing DK cargo throw stuff, or "here comes the zero to death" when I start a combo as Bayonetta (disclaimer: I have never actually gotten a zero to death with Bayo).

Basically in tournament play, I don't see any reason why not to talk a bit, although make sure you respect your opponent(s) and if they want you to be quiet, respect that. Being completely stoic to your opponents doesn't leave as good as an impression, and some friendly chatter between matches is great. For the great majority of us, this is all for fun anyways since we probably aren't earning any money off these tournaments, so do whatever you need to do in order to have more fun!

If I'm up against a friend, I'll **** talk them in the middle of the game pretty often, but never against someone I don't know. I'll typically only talk to someone I don't know in the middle of the game if something cool/janky/crazy happens. And I pretty much never talk during games that I need to concentrate really hardly to win. And I've never had an opponent say they wanted me to be quiet, but I would definitely stop talking if they did.

I've been known to mutter curse words when I mess up, or if my opponent gets a good read on me I'll tell them "Nice!" or something along those line. Anything more then that seems rude unless you're already friends with your opponent. All bets are off during friendlies though.

Ah, for a second, I thought this thread would be about the spectators talking during matches, especially in those tournaments where the spectators are right behind the players' back.
Because, believe me, I have lost matches where I could easily split part of the blame from losing on the spectators. Apparently, some of them really like narrating everything that is happening in the match when they're pretty much right besides you.

When I play I talk too much, seriously, Muskrat Catcher Muskrat Catcher and I do the same things lol
On the other hand, a friend of mine sometimes needs complete silence to concentrate, it's so weird that I can't even talk to him during gameplay.

Depends on the other player, some people like to talk and some don't. I wouldn't talk if I didn't know the person.
