In my lab procedure, after I did the esterification reaction of the salicylic acid, why do I need to use NaHCO3 combined with HCL as shown in the picture below and from where the heck does this molecule comes from ? :

Thanks, I need help real quick...

I'm not too sure. It's kinda strange cause in the end there's no difference from before you added NaHCO3 and HCL.

Try Wiki. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NaHCO3

Edit: Why is the Oxygen randomly replaced with a Carbon in the 3rd acid diagram?

I understood what happened.

My teacher is a ****ing ******** *******, so he badly wrote the second reaction. The NaHCO3 actually serves the purpose of making the ASA soluble, so we can filtrate it another time before making it drop with a strong acid. Thanks for your help though, I really wasted time on this just because my chemistry teacher is a complete idiot.

Goldshadow, how many science credits are you taking this year? I remember you said a few months ago... it blew my mind.

My group's independent project this time around is the synthesis of t-pentyl chloride, a boring and easy project compared to the isolation of casein and lactose from milk (which I wanted to have )

Organic chemistry is awesome n__n

I'm taking 17 this semester! That's six classes... Cell Biology, Organic Chem I, Animal Physiology, Gen Physics I, Human Genetics, and a biology-tutoring thing I'm doing for credit. I'm not taking as many next semester though. I'll have 12 credits of science classes (Physics II, Organic Chem II, Organic Chem Lab, Mammalian Endocrinology) and 3 non-science (English).

Ah nice... I'm going to be taking organic chemistry lab next semester, but we just happened to have picked an easy organic-lab for our independent project during general chemistry last year (which coincidentally was synthesis of acetalsalicylic acid).
But I do love organic chem!
