The edges in this game have huge sweetspots which allow you to avoid danger completely. In fact, in many cases, you put yourself in more danger by using the rope snake than by simply allowing yourself to enter the sweetspot range and auto grab with invincibility frames. The rope snake allows you to attack faster afterward but also puts you in harms way. Learn the furthest reaches of the sweetspot range of edges and you will always be safe assuming you can reach them.
This will leave you with the most anti edgeguarding options. Uair cuts through most enemy attacks and Fair and PK Fire may also be used depending on spacing. Obviously it is not always possible, but when you can you want to avoid using rope snake if the opponent is in a position that they can take advantage of your vulnerability during it.
This also gives Lucas (and any other character) an infinite ledgestall which is for the most part very safe. If an opponent were to try to get to you, you can easily double jump into an Uair and safely make it back onto the ledge or stage. The only thing you will have to worry about are projectiles in which case, you can probably get back onto the stage without worry anyway.
Did you know that if you're holding onto the edge and the opponent is near the edge that you can drop and immediately do an Uair and it will hit the opponent without you having to get onto the stage? It's pretty much guarantees safety if they're dumb enough to get that close to you.
