I don't know about you, but...Support characters would be a nice addition, IMHO. They'd be pre-chosen before a match, and randomly pop in and do a single attack during a match. Certain support characters would be unlockable as well. A supporter would also give certain nintendo characters who normally wouldn't be suited to the life of a main fighter. If you support this idea and have a suggestion for a support character, post it here!

*UPDATE*
Support Trophies are confirmed!
Confirmed Trophies

-Hammer Brother: Does his famous hammer attack!
-Samurai Goroh: He just slices and slices away with his sword!
-Dr Wright: A giant Sim City building pops up unsuspecting foes!

Suggested Support trophies::

-Squawk(The parrot from Donkey Kong Country): Flies above the field, dropping coconuts. (submitted by Pyr0)
-Amazin' Flyin' Hammer Brother(First apperaed in Super Mario World) Appears on his little platform cloud, tossing small hammers. Will occasionally toss a large, item-class hammer, which can be picked up. (submitted by Pyr0)
-Nell (Advance Wars): drops an air strike on the field.
-Tetris blocks: Appear and fall onto the field, possibly staying around and changing the terrain.
-Rush & Eddie (Megaman): Appear, dropping random items. Rush may stick around as a spring/moving platform.
-Lakitu: Tosses Spiny shells onto the field. These are like Koopa shells, but hurt if jumped on. They can still be picked up.
-Navi (Zelda): Allows a player to specifically target another player, giving all projectiles and thrown items limited tracking towards that player.
-Tails (Sonic): Follows the player for a limited time, can carry the player or be thrown a la Sonic Advance 3.
-Tom Nook (Animal Crossing): Throws various tools quickly.
-R.O.B: Throws GyroMyte discs that go through landscape in a straight line.
-Boney (Mother 3): The greatest dog the Mother series has seen, though arguably the worst final character. Rushes an opponet and bites onto their arm, doing mild damage and stunning them while the opponent tries to shake him off. Totally not stolen from Akumaru in Naruto GNT (Clash of Ninja in the states).
-Sain: (Fire Emblem 7) Rides though the stage on his horse knocking into anyone who crosses his path. Disappears if he hits a wall or falls into a pit. (Submitted by Destruction_King)
-Waluigi (Mario Series): Throws a giant Bob-Omb into the screen. WARNING: can hit you too! (Submitted by Destruction_King)
-Karnov (Karnov): Spits fire at one random opponent. (Submitted by Destruction_King)
-Saria (Ocarina of Time): Plays her Ocarina. Anyone around her sits to listen (fall asleep) or begins to dance uncontrollably. (Submitted by Destruction_King)
-Mallow (Super Mario RPG): Causes it to rain on screen. Lightning bolts then randomly strike the screen. (Submitted by Destruction_King)
-Dr. Mario: Rather than being a mario clone, he appears and drops down pills onto the stage...and maybe viruses, too! (Submitted by Dr_Twist)
-Peppy & Slippy (Starfox): Show up in arwings and fire lasers, regardless of the stage, at other players.
-Knuckles(Sonic) Appears from underground in an eruption of fireballs. (Submitted by Dr_Twist)
-NiGHTS (NiGHTS into Dreams): Floats along the ground, looping around other players and briefly stunning/inverting their controls.
-Captain Olimar: Crashlands in his ship, and throws random pikmin. Reds do fire damage, Yellows do thunder, blues do ice, purples do stronger non-element, and whites do none, but add a flower on the hit foe's head, a la Lip's Stick.
-New Age Retro Hippie(Earthbound): Too cool to keep out of the game, the NARH throws rulers and protractors. He also changes the level's theme music to his own for about 30 seconds, because he's that darn cool.
-Mona (Wario Ware): Drives across the stage with her scooter.
-Excitebiker: See Mona.
-The Great Mizuti(Baten Kaitos): Floats around, dropping spells and generally being awesome.
-Fawful (M&L:SuperStar Saga): Have you readiness for this, fink-rats? Flying headgear fires shots of indescrinite energy.
-Joe (Car Battler Joe): Drives across the stage firing his Battle Car's weapons.
-Cranky Kong (The original Donkey Kong): Throws 3-5 barrels in a set direction.
-Paula (Earthbound): Uses her Pray command, with varying results.
-A.D.A.M. (Metroid Fusion, Samus's computer) Flies Samus's starship to bombard the battlefield with laser fire. Or possibly drop an energy tank.
-Otacon (Metal Gear Solid): ...no idea what he'd do. But what else is Hal Jordan Emmerich, if not a support character? (Sue me, I've yet to play a MGS game.)
-Tingle (Legend of Zelda): Creates balloon platforms, attracts coins in Coin Mode.
-Little Mac (Punch Out!): A close range support character, Little Mac jumps in in place of the one who summoned him, absorbing hits and retaliating with jabs, hooks, and bodyblows. Afterwards, he finishes with a powerful uppercut, based on the damage taken while out. Little Mac can be KO'd if he takes 100% or more damage, and any opponent doing so may get a bonus at the end of the match.
-Any Non-Mario character from a Mario Sports title (Such as Kid or Azalia in Mario Golf, or Alex and Harry in Mario Tennis): Ball Blitz! Rapid fire sports balls fly from the forescreen.
-Aiai (Super Monkey Ball): Spins at high speed, bowling over opponents until they "Fall out". Similar to Jigglypuff's Rollout, only with little to no charge time, as well as no ricochet off of opponents. Falls quite fast off ledges, can hit 3 walls maximum (reversing direction each time) before dissapearing.
-Vyse (Skies of Aarcadia) : Pirates Wrath, yo! Charges up a whirlwind with thunder at the center, which then charges across the landscape a good distance, trapping a foe inside. He then charges the trapped foe and slices them with the full wrath of an air pirate.
-Ryu Hyabusa(SP?) (Ninja Gaiden): Being a ninja, he flips out and kills people. Really. Turns invisible and rushes opponents for a good 30 seconds.
-Captain Syrup(Wario Land) Being a pirate, she shouts a resounding "Arrrr, me hearties! and summons her crew of loyal spearmen to surround foes. About 10 spearmen are summoned per opposing player, to a limit of 30. Spearmen do about 10% damage with their spear, and can take about 20% damage before dissapearing. If jumped on, they are flipped on their back and unable to move for about 5 seconds. The spearmen automatically vanish if any remain 60 seconds after being called, and have Green Koopa intelligence when it comes to ledges.
-Goemon (Ganbare Goemon, Mystical Ninja...) Blows into a Conch shell, then dissapears in a beam of light. The background of the stage falls backwards like a stage backdrop, and the super robot, IMPACT! appears, firing off the ultimate power, Impact Super Punch! Any opponent foolish enough to get hit by this move takes damage and knockback in a similar fashion to one or two of Master Hand's "charging from the background" attacks.
Neo G Red (Gotcha Force) Grows from toy-sized bot to giant sized behemoth with the power of courage, performing a Neo G Crash, with a Buster Laser afterwards.
Phoenix Wright: Yells "Objection!", destroying all items on the field, and stunning all opponents for a few seconds.
Wizzrobe (Legend of Zelda) Teleports randomly around for a few seconds, firing off blasts of fire or ice.
The Mii: A customizable support character, one of the Miis programmed onto your system. Would do something different based on the last Wii game you played before putting in Super Smash Bros Brawl. The default Mii behavior would be a friendly wave, doing minimal damage.

...on a side note, I got hit with sudden inspiration, and see bugfrags as another type of pokeball, summoning various virus navi's from the Megaman Battle Network series.

I love the idea a lot. It's very similar to Marvel Vs. Capcom 1, where there was a supporting character randomly chosen for you that spanned the minor Capcom and Marvel properties.

BUT!

R.O.B should be his own character, and Captain Olimar should be his own character. I think those two have enough credit to their name to give them a full character slot.

Also, If they went with this idea, you'd probably have to deal with the legions of Newbs saying "how do you play as (really cool support character who should have been playable)" or "Why is (Playable character) Playable? HE should be Supporting."

People just work that way.

Support characters are an interesting idea, but I agree with dotdotdot that it could also spark much debate about who should/should not be support (it sure did with Jump Superstars). For example, ROB and Captain Olimar both deserve to be full characters. Also, there may some trouble integrating it in the game.

I think they should save it for whenever they decide to make a DS Smash Bros., it would probably work better with the touchscreen (again, see JSS) and could help differentiate the game from the console Smashes.

But what else is Hal Jordan, if not a support character?
He's the Green Lantern.

I agree a lot of what you said, except for Olimar and ROB. Not that they'd be bad characters mind you, but not the top of my personal list. That's all.

However, despite my misgiving, For the sake of this thread, I have a couple of suggestions.

SAIN: (FE7) Rides though the stage on his horse knocking into anyone who crosses his path. Disappears if he hits a wall or falls into a pit.

WALUIGI (Mario Series): Throws a Bob-Omb into the screen. WARNING: can hit you too!

KARNOV (Karnov): Spits fire at one random opponent.

SARIA (Ocarina of Time): Plays her Ocarina. Anyone around her sits to listen (fall asleep.)

MALLOW (Super Mario RPG): Causes it to rain on screen. Lightning bolts then randomly strike the screen.

I like your mallow idea that would be pretty cool and also a good alternative to actually making him a playable character

FOOOOOOOOOOOL! geno is better than mallow!! (......kinda :) )

*nooby rant*
MALLOW IS A CLOUD WITH A DIPER ON HIM! geno is a freaking star (right? :ohwell:) GENO FOR BRAWL!.....altho i whould like to see mallow in brawl :ohwell:

I don't think you understand that me using Mallow as a sub character supported Geno as a playable character.

If Mallow is a sub character, one from Super Mario RPG, he'd be representing a game or character you can actually play as. Well, If Mallow is in the game, but you can't play as him, who's the only other playable character who represents the series not already in the game?

That's right Geno.

See? Master_MetaKnight understands.

EDIT: Nevermind, misread. On the other hand, though, they're both technically square characters, and knowing Nintendo, if they get one, they'll get the other.
SPOILER:
Mallow is not a frog!
END SPOILER.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Because you totally can't play as Mario in SMRPG:LotSS. Or Peach. Or Bowser. Geno would be a nice main char, though.

I'll say, I'm still ticked off that Usopp and Tony Tony Chopper were reduced to support characters yet Nico Robin and soon Franky are fully playable characters, even though they joined the Straw Hat crew after the first two.

Anyway, support characters could work, but it might make battles too complicated. Though if they are implimented, somebody like the Sheriff could work.

I KNOW! And Fraky isn't even a member of the Mugiwara Pirates
yet, as far as I've seen anyways
! Technically, Ussop
never officially rejoined either
... but in Battle stadium D.O.N, Tony Tony Chopper is playable :)

Anyway, support characters are an interesting idea, but you should only have a limit, like 3 times a match or something, they shouldn't be extremely spam-able either

(Note that using either a pirate or a ninja as a counter vs the other will nullify both effects.)
That's plain confusing. Anyway, I have two complaints about the first post right now.

1. Her name is Captain Syrup, not Queen Syrup.

2. About my Mallow post, why did you add that extra section about "powering up ice and water moves while decreasing fire moves?" That's stupid and unnecessary, but most importantly, I didn't write it. You shouldn't post someone else's ideas and then add your own little comments or whatever to them. they're not yours to screw with, let alone then post it was I who said it.

I don't mean to flame you, but having others put words in my mouth, words I don't agree with, really irks me.

Understood, and fix'd. The main idea behind it was the possible inclusion of weather effects being added to the game as well, which would have different effects on the gameplay. Blizzards could reduce visibility/traction, a sandstorm could increase damage taken while reducing knockback, byt have no effect on a "Metal character", and so on. It's a pokemon-based idea, really, but I think it could work.

Support characters? It might work, but there are a lot of things that would need to be considered in order to make it work properly. Does each character get their own specific support character, or can anyone use anyone they want? Is it randomized, or can you pick from a list? Is it activated by an item or a button sequence? I think that, if you want to discuss support characters, we should try and come up with the mechanics before the characters. But, that's just me.

What about Phoenix Wright as a support character. He could pop in and yell "Objection!" and stuns all the characters on the field.

Effect: Bum-rushes the nearest enemy (to the location of the thrown AT) and imedeatly begins to combo it before jumping back and lazering it for heavy damage (the combo does fair-minimal damage) as well as stunning the enemy (ala Majora's Mask)

Mmm, cookies.

...Wonder if they'll put in Cooking Mama as a trophy. She makes the best cookies.
If they do so, I'm going to have to demand they make her do a Raging Demon with big, honkin' kitchen knives.
