Super Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS: A Competitive Training Program - I NEED YOUR HELP!

Hello Smashboards!

I'm currently studying Business in a college here in the UAE. We have a new even coming up and the organizers approached me to do a gaming training program of a game of my choice. Of course, I decided to do one mainly about how to play Smash in a competitive level; turning casual players into competitive ones who can join our relitavely young scene here in the UAE.

The problem is, I don't know how to go about doing it. I seem to be unsure of what topics should I cover and whenever an idea crosses my mind, I feel that it could be "too competitive" and "overwhelm" my students. I don't want to half-ass thing as I want more people to join our scene. So, what do you suggest? What sort of topics and activities should I cover in order for this to be successful?

I don't know what kind of time and resources you have but I'd do something like

1. Understanding your characters moveset/options
2. Understanding pressure and stage control
3. Understanding how to force reads/when you can make reads
4. Advanced Tech and when to apply it
5. Gaining matchup knowledge
6. Where to go from here, mindgames, DA META GAME, finding tournaments etc.

It depends on your target audience. Are your students already familiar with Smash, or is it possible your students have never played it before?

If it is the latter, then you will need to include training to cover the basics. The different attacks, defensive maneuvers, how to win, etc. It does not have to be long, but it does need to be thorough enough that they can understand the more complicated advanced stuff.

I would break it into different parts. A basic over all "How to Play" and a more in depth "How to Play". The in depth would cover things like fast falling, edge guarding, off stage play, power shielding, combos, etc.

Then have a competitive section where you show more advanced stuff like perfect pivoting, boost grabbing and other AT. This section should also include reads and mind games.

The training program is currently being targeted for those who have experience in playing the game casually. But, you pointed out a good point Zonderion in pointing out that some may have more experience playing then others.

I'll make sure to include sections to tailor towards different type of players just to cover everything and to avoid any surprises.

I still would like to hear more input from my fellow Smashboarders, so anything will be valuable :grin:

I would let everyone get a chance to find the character they want focus playing competitively with, and start teaching them the options that you know and shape everything around playing a couple friendlies matches. Teach them about the basic advance techs that are important.
This is basically a "demo" to comp Smash 4.
There's no way to know all the characters inside and out, so you can always ask for help from some of the smashers here.
