So I've had Brawl since the midnight release in march of 2008; I went with a friend of mine who also bought the game, and ever since we've more or less been rivals. For the first year or so we were more or less neck and neck at skill level; sometimes he would beat me to a pulp in a night and vice versa. However, throughout the past few months he has pulled away from me in the race and it seems that any time we play lately he has the upper hand in the matches (though I still win a decent amount). However this happened, clearly the solution to my problem would be to improve my game! I've been playing a lot of people on smash boards to round out my skills as opposed to playing only my friend, but even this is not enough to get me up to his skill level again. Does anybody have any suggestions for me to get back the upper hand? We all know how frustrating it can be to lose night after night.

Start CPing your opponent's characters' worst MUs, that's usually the best option.

If your rival plays MK, I feel sorry for you.

He's a Pit player, but the way we play is that rather than using mains we tend to just use a select majority of the lineup, so it's tough to practice against one specific character (On some nights he doesn't even play pit lol).

♥ My post count is my age. Deal with it.
1) Practice.
2) Work on spacing.
3) Work on punishing.
4) Know enemy weaknesses .
5) Know enemy's worst stage and know your best stage.
6) Learn some Advanced Techniques.
7) Learn enemy match-ups.
8) Sharpen teching precision
9) Learn about DI and SDI

all of the above is a long term thing. Searching around the boards and watching videos is a great way to up your skill level.

Oh! I was about to welcome you to the smashboards due to your post count but your join date says otherwise.
But welcome BACK to the smashboards ^_^'

I've been using it since February, I just mainly use it to find matches rather than post anything. Anyway, what are DI and SDI?

directional influence and Smash Directional influence
it's when you press a direction during the Hitlag(time after ur hit that you both just float there. think zelda's sweepspoted aerials or the falcon knee.) DI is the general holding the direction while ur in the air being launched. SDI is that instantaneous flick of the control stick to make you go in a different direction. the best way to practice it(and see the effect of SDI) is have a smart bomb thrown at you and smashing the control stick in a direction. you will appear to teleport.
