Well, I watch many VGBOOTCAMP's Smash 4 and I subconsciously pick up habits from the players. From playing Ike and Luigi, I also picked up the habit of trying to read opponents (Ike's Slow Movement and Up-Tilt, Luigi's Up-B and Down B. Also Palutena's Up Smash)
I can also pick up the opponent's patterns and those things are the only way I get kills (I suck ass at the game XD).
Does this happen to you?

I learned a lot of Smash from picking up on friends I used to play with. I still do with Game and Watch due to a friend who mains him.

Sometimes watching others is the best way to learn.

I saw a couple videos of Zero playing Falco and he explained the process of how he picks apart another players' style and punishes them for doing even some of the smallest mistakes.
It was pretty cool

Can I get a link to that video?

Watching other people play the game is personally what helps me the most. In fact that works for me in everyday life to whether it be school stuff or even on rhythms i don't know on a piece of music i haven't played yet (i play the clarinet in the school band). Watching your opponent though is on of the most important things you can do because if you know what there doing and when they're doing it you can punish them, or if your using a character with a counter you'll know when to counter.

Unconscious. Common mistake, really :p. Subconscious refers to things that are not in your conscious but can easily become conscious. Like, what color is your shirt right now? Are you wearing socks? That kind of stuff, where you have to think a little bit before remembering. Unconscious is what you're referring to, because you don't realize the learning.

Anyways, yep! Sometimes I'm even amazed at what I learn unconsciously. However, a lot of my reads also come from conscious observations. I keep track of things like how does the opponent approach, how does he get up, what aerials does he prefer, what are his defensive responses, where does he tech, when does he air dodge, etc.

Monkey see, monkey do. The easiest way to learn anything is to copy someone else doing it. That's why watching professional play or play in general will inadvertently improve your own.

There's also mental practice/visualization, but that's a whole other topic.

I get accused of "looking up combos" all of the time, and it's because I watch almost every match VGBootcamp uploads.

I learned how to play :4gaw: almost entirely due to this.

Honestly it's how I learned just the right time to uthrow > Thunder KO for many characters, because a friend of mine was trying to do it but was testing when the right percentages were and I just picked up from him (he is also a Pika main). I've also learned a bit from watching stuff too, but once you have that info you do still have to start applying things yourself and learning what works best for you. Trying to outright copy someone else will not get you far because you won't actually be perfectly the same as them and when you realize that you won't know what you are doing wrong.

Learn in pieces and perfect your own style
