Sub friendly-fire option?

You can play Smash generally with friendly fire on and off but how about something in between?

What if friendly fire was on but doesn't inflict any damage when you do happen to attack your teammate?

Say Captain Falcon attempts his upB and is clearly going to miss the ledge and Link sends a boomerang to intercept him or Falco's laser giving him another opportunity?

This also opens doors for players to be more open with moves that do indiscriminant damage such as Link's upB in the midsts of battle. Or a Falco can jump in with his shine, long range smash attacks etc.

Would you think this is a better replacement to the existing friendfire mode or potentially a viable one?

I think that would actually work. Friendly fire is usually turned on to prevent cheap tactics where one player just sprays projectiles through his teammate. A middle option where knockback is applied but no damage dealt would be nice to have around. :)

I like it. I'd probably play with it all the time unless somebody felt insecure. However, I'm a good enough player to save people usually.
One thing I like about it is that it makes it more of a team since you can help your ally more.
It shouldn't be allowed in 2v2 tourneys though

Wow thats a sick idea.
So if you're falling of the edge, you and your team mate could keep jumping off eachother...unless theres was high %, then someone would die lol.

That is what I think. I believe it would perhaps enhance the cooperative team game where people can actually strategize deeper than the current option with this.

Why would you say this should not be implemented in tournaments though?

Well my original thought was that even if your team mate is at higher % a team attack against him would have the same effect as though he was at 0% or maybe 5%.(keep reading).

Imagine your team mate falling and you are hanging on the edge as Link and you drop down purposely and do your up B to stick him insde the recovery and bring him back and at the same time grab teh ledge again. Despite saving your teammate, I beleive this would allow more strategy in the fray.

EDIT: Ok, I just thought about it. To refine this further, what if your teammate had a handicap towards you of maybe 3. So at higher %s your teammate would get affected accordingly but not as much as compared to being dealt by the opponent.

So with this you will have those memorable moments where you accidentally kill your teammate with like a missed Samus beam or Smash attack but it won't be so frequent. So there is a balance.

it is a good idea. even better that if u dealt damage to your partner it would be as if they were at 0 percent

Good idea, I doubt everyone would like it though. It would definitely change things up though.

Well of course not everyone would like it, that's why it would have an ON/OFF function like regular friendly fire.

I don't really see how this would add more strategy or option :/

I mean, saving your team mate is still the same, except they don't take the damage. Killing your teamate will happen just as often unless the only time you kill your team mate is by hitting them multiple times 0.0;

If your teammate takes 0% damage with the 0%-like knock back you won't kill him as often. Yes, team saving is almost the same, however the brawling would be more 'calculated'.

What I see is teammates whose character's move does more indiscriminant damage would be able to do so, without worrying that his team mate would die from it. Eg. Your team is fighting by the edge of a stage and is at 130% and the opponent is at 150%, what if you were to go with Link and jump in and upB spike them both but your teammate wouldnt die cuz of the special knockback.

The downside is of those moments where you kill your teammate accidentally tipping the momentum in the other direction etc.

To get around that, maybe there should be a handicap for teammates?

i would use it just in case i get pissed at my team mate, but he will probably survive long enough for me to calm down so i don't end up losing;)
good idea though.
