Nakat mentioned on stream yesterday that he thinks that in this generation, a player with strong use of many characters will have the advantage over players who just master one.

Thoughts?

Really depends on what character they master and how high they are on the tier list, and if the characters are balanced enough.... I don't see how that would make sense though. Allot of people don't choose characters in accordance to what the other player chose. So if you can beat everyone with one character than you're good enough? Idrk.

In a tournament set-up that involves counterpicking characters, multiple character use is a huge advantage. :) You'll face greater diminishing returns if you spend all of your time on mastering a single character than if you spend it on multiple.

Given how it seems like many of the characters are good this time it will help for matchups. Like I watched a tournament where Little mac whooped Zelda, Robin whooped Little Mac, and Zelda beat Robin. Not the best evidence but there will be characters who are good options and ones that are bad. Always good to have an alternative so you don't get stuck in a terrible matchup.

I never focus on a single character. I think it's way better to have several characters that you're good with so you can face whatever you are facing. I mostly choose a random character when I play, that way I end up being kinda good with most of them, bad with some of them and really good with a few of them.

Two, maybe three to cover all opposing characters.

Melee, I was Marth, Sheik, and Falco. Brawl, Marth and Falco.

Smash 4, probably Marth, Sheik, and ZSS.

But in the end of both of those games, most people just mained a single character.. You rarely saw fox mains switch. You rarely see MK players switch... I know it happens (Armada with Young Link, M2K etc) but it is in fact rare...

This tends to happen when certain characters have very few/no bad matchups. :p

I usually play as everyone with a few favorites just because I like to have some variety, but I usually have like five-ish characters that I use more often than the rest. Not sure who I'll play as this time. I already plan to play For Glory as everyone to test them out though, so we'll see how that goes.

I like to choose a line up of characters I like to play. Mostly because there are just times when I won't do well with one of those characters and need to leave them be for a while and play others.

I am not a tournament player, so I have absolutely no reasons to play one single character. I do plan to limit myself to 3 to 5 at most, though.

I don't have a main, I used to 'main' Mario, Captain Falcon and Donkey Kong in Melee but I wasn't good so I don't considered them my mains. I Brawl I only used to choose Random. A few months ago I won a tourney and I used a different character in every match, in the final one I had to choose Meta Knight (didn't want to use him on the final, but I had to) to counter a Pit main.
In project M I also choose Random, but I consider myself better with Mario, Ivysaur and Link as they're pretty powerful.
So I think I'll continue with that path of playing and keep playing with the entire roster.

It really depends on if the matchups aren't a one-way thing like they always have and if the characters you main have bad matchups in the first place. If Mario, for example, had overall neutral matchups with only a few being a minor disadvantage, you'd be better off learning those disadvantageous matchups instead of learning a whole new characters.

In the past, the best winning strategy has been to pick up the character with the most favorable matchups because that was a very obvious choice (Pika, Fox, Meta Knight). Hopefully this game will make that choice a little more difficult with a more balanced cast.

Personally, it's just not fun for me to only use the sane character. Too repetitive.

I really like Mega Man and want to focus on him, however this is going to be a game similar to project M in that there is not best three that everyone plays. Mega Man, Ike, and Ganondorf look promising. I hope tiers are non-existent this time around, and instead focus on utilization of characters.

there will always be tiers unless every character is exactly the same(or you have a rock/paper/scissors style matchup). It's just a matter of how big the gap is from the top to the bottom.

Well because I started this tradition where I main all the girls (which will be a huge downfall this time around haha), I usually have a lot of versatility in my matchups (ex. even though I only second Ivy in PM, I do use her against Marth a lot). Maining one or two characters is probably your best option, but it's always fun to have a lot of backups and secondaries, because you get a lot more flexibility in your matchups. Although, saying that, secondaries are called so for a reason--you will never have the skill you have with them versus your main. Conversely, if you mained multiple characters as primaries, you might have less overall skill then someone else due to you portioning you gameplay out to so many characters. Unless you get to play LOADS or are M2K, or both.
