Streamlining for Online Play

So I finally got my mac boot camped with Win XP and Project64 to work online. I've only ever played console smash and the online seems be a lot slower. I typically have a 53ms ping with my connection set to excellent and get 5-8 frames of lag.
I have a 2.4GHz Intell Core 2 Duo Processor and 2 GB of ram.
Is there anything I can do to make it run faster or smoother?
Also I've only played on Galaxy64 so far.

play on lan and it will reduce the delay,
but best of all is using the p2p client as you will get the smoothest connection to the other person,
and the least amount of delay.
