Do you know THIS guy? Of course you do. This is the Devil. He's an Assist Trophy. He scrolls the screen to utterly annoy you so that you can't see the incoming Charge Shot that Samus is about to Instant KO you with. However, there is one person who can stop his reign:

This is Tamagon. He's a dragon that, for some reason, decided in invade Hell and destory everything. Makes sense. He was created by Shigeru Miyamoto, who was also the father of many Nintendo franchises, as well as the music made by Koji Kondo, a composer I've already gave reference to. This put Tamagon in the ranks of Excitebike, Super Mario Bros. and Ice Climber as popular games for the Famicom. However, Tamagon and the Devil never came to us in America. However, they were referenced several times in many games, such as Captain Rainbow, Tetris DS, PiCOPiCT: Art Style and both Melee AND Brawl. I believe that Tamagon and the Devil can be a very interesting rep. First off, let's look at the game itself for inspiration. Luckily, unlike my LAST retro thread, I have reference I can understand.
  • Tamagon travels through a maze in a Pac-Man like manner in order to stop the Devil. His first test? To use the crosses spread around the Devil's lair to feast on pellets and breathe fire onto the loyal minions of the Devil, which are, for some reason, fried eggs or something like that. Japan, you are SO random and that's why we love you.
  • The entire time, the Devil is just chilling above the maze, mocking Tamagon by performing exotic dances. Each time he points in a different direction that orders his minions to scroll the walls in the direction he's pointing. This can squish the heroic dragon and stop him forever.
  • After Tamagon has collected all the pellets and destroyed that fraction of the Devil World, he will enter an area that has scattered Bibles all over the place. In the middle of the maze, there's a seal which, when all four Bibles are collected, can destroy the Devil for GOOD! So, like the crosses, this allows Tamagon to breathe fire once more and destroy the minions. Once he collects all 4 Bibles, the seal is open and the Devil is sucked in.
  • Oh, it gets better. After Tamagon completely eradicates the demon lord, he can enter a secret area which holds six mystical Bonus Boxes, and the Fried Eggmen are still operating the scrolling walls. He must collect his treasure in a short amount of time before the Devil breaks out again and reforms his dwelling to reattempt to murder the dragon. Eventually, after you claim the spoils of the Underworld King, he will escape his prison and recreate his mazes for you anyway. But, hey, you've got some treasure...right?
So, after I've thickened the plot, we can see that they both have some moveset potential. Tamagon can breathe fire and open seals to another realm using the power of literature, and the Devil can perform moves like Jagger to scroll the stage and summon minions to turn foes sunny-side up. Like most of my character threads, these possible reps are VERY unlikely (due to the fact that I came into the Smashboards scene late and missed out on the GOOD character threads) but are interesting characters that have potential.

Interesting retro choices, imagine if the Devil's ability in Brawl was his Final Smash...

They'd actually be pretty fun and interesting to play as, but highly unlikely.

I've always loved Devil World. Firstly I like how truly bizarre it is. A dragon invading hell and destroying everything? Cool. Weird references to Christianity everywhere including crosses, bibles, the Devil and hell? Brilliant. I'm a sucker for things that make absolutely no sense in video games, because they don't need to. It's actually great they had the courage to base a game around religion.

I adore the gameplay as well. Is it a Pac-man rip-off? Meh, you could say that, but I think it takes the basic Pac-man formula and adds lots of creative ideas to it. In my opinion Devil World is a game than Pac-man. Having three different 'levels' (phase 1 where you collect the pellets, phase 2 where you push bibles into the seal and the bonus stage) makes the gameplay more varied and the game much more replayable than Pac-man. Having to contend with the Devil moving the stage around as well as dodging enemies gives you more to think about too making the game much more engaging and challenging.

The Devil is one my favourite assist trophies so I'd like him to stay as one rather than become a playable character, but I'd love to see Tamagon playable.

True, I'm tempted to turn it into the Tamagon thread instead of the Tamagon & Devil thread. Fun Fact: The designer had no idea about Pac-Man when designing the game, and had only heard of it after the game was in stores. Nowadays ol' Nintendo can't even release it everywhere because someone's going to sue them for "mocking religion". However, these same people don't have a problem with Castlevania. How is that? I REALLY want it to come to the Virtual Console just so I can play it. Most of the information in the OP is from the Wikipedia page or the Pat the NES Punk review! I'll add you to the support list.

I actually have it on my Wii, it was released on the European Virtual Console. It's kind of cool that we got a game that North America didn't (since usually it's the other way around) but I would like it to be released in NA to help the game gets the credit and fame it deserves.

It'll probably never come to the NA VC, I'd wager the reason being Nintendo can't be bothered to put it on there than people potentially getting upset over religious references in a 29 year old game. If you want to play it there's websites where you can play it through your browser.

I like the idea of Tamagon but he has no arms to grab others or items like the Super Scope.

I Support the Devil. I also have some ideas on how he could work.
He would be mostly based around summoning and controling minions.
Direct control over camera would easily be overpowered. Instead I would give him:
• moving walls special. Based on those in his game. would work similar to Isaac's AT.
• Wind Effects. some his attack would have wind effects that he can use to move opponents.
Final Smash Could include camera control.
Overall he would have pretty good stage control with the help of minions, manipulation of opponent and good aerial mobility. On the other hand most of his attacks would very weak and he would be pretty light.

I'm more interested in the Devil being playable than any other retro combined (aside from Sable). The camera movements could potentially be lots of fun. XD
I support!
