Sticking to Sheik?

Hello everyone

I've recently started trying to get in to smash and find myself deep into it right now practicing whenever I got time and watching a lot of matches on youtube and following tournaments etc.

I started playing as Sheik as I found her(?) playstyle fun and exciting but recently I've checking out Marth more and a little bit of Falco mainly cause I feel like playing Sheik is making me miss learning stuff like L-cancelling etc.

I just wanted to check if I could get some veteran input in what char to play, not the standard "play what you think is fun" but what character I should choose to develop my skills as a beginner and that of course has some value in higher lvl plays.

I also gladly take recommendations of other characters other then the ones I named.

Thank you in advance!

How would you like to join the Marth army?
Marth is a good character to learn with. Good wavedash, good grab, all of that. Once you learn more advanced tech, you can decide for yourself who you want to use.

I ended up staying with Marth, but it's up to you. You can learn with any character, but in my opinion Marth is good to learn with.

Shiek is great for a beginner character. Her moves are good and lead into combos fairly easily. She's pretty easy tech-wise compared to characters like Fox and Falco, but she does require a certain level of mental awareness, so I wouldn't say that playing Shiek = winning. She's great for learning the basics though.

I guess you are right lol (Marth bias)

Make sure you learn the basic tech first before focusing on a character.

Thanks for the inputs!

Yea Marth feels like a solid starter if I want to progress tech wise aswell, I don't really mind if I get a slow start, that I can live with.

And yeah, Sheik feels like a solid starter aswell and I feel like I progressed quite a bit after just 2 weeks playing. As I said though, it feels a bit like I am missing out on some parts, like L-cancelling properly due to playing Sheik.

Learning the basic tech first was always my goal, that is the reason why I doubted starting with Sheik, feels like it might hurt my tech progress.

Luigi is good for wavedash/land practice.
Ganon is good for L cancel. Just if you are looking for specific tech practice stuff.

Fox will boost your technical ability faster than most other characters
I don't doubt that. I've been trying him out a bit aswell and tried to get the shffl down and it went pretty good. Still feel like it's to hard of a character to start with to get the basics of the basics down!

His difficulty will push new players to learn the essential abilities faster. For the strategic aspects, Captain Falcon and Marth will teach them better

If you enjoy Sheik I would stick with her. I started out a Sheik player but after seeing a lot of good Fox play I eventually switched. It's nice starting with Sheik because you learn basic tech skill and get a good sense of non-technical aspects of the game like covering certain options and reading opponents, and this stuff transfers between characters pretty easily. I would stick with the character you have most fun playing though, you'll end up wanting to play better the more fun you have (in my opinion).

Just play as whoever you have fun with. I used to play solely Marth for a long time but eventually started playing as Captain Falcon and later Sheik. These three are my mains and I play them all for different reasons. Sheik is probably my best character, as I find her very easy to play as and I can do a lot of damage. Marth would be my second best since I played him for so long, he's the character I'm most comfortable with. He's not as easy as Sheik though and I'm still having difficulty with properly using his advanced tech. Finally there's Falcon who I want to be my #1 main but I'm not at that level yet, so he's currently the character I play as when I just want to do some flashy combos.

So yeah, stick with Sheik but don't be afraid of adopting some new mains or perhaps just a secondary. Sheik's great but unless you plan on becoming the best Sheik player in the world, you'll probably have difficulties in some match-ups. Marth would be a good second choice but feel free to experiment with a bunch of different characters.

Thanks a lot for all the replies, it has really helped me to get perspective of this hearing from people who went through the same.

I have decided not to drop Sheik but still keep her as my main and at the same time try out Marth a bit more since I really enjoy his playstyle aswell and to easier learn some tech. I do feel more comfortable with Sheik though (probably only due to the fact that I played her way more) so I feel like I want to improve her more aswell.

Thanks again!
