Here are some of the things that are steps backwards from brawl and can hopefully be fixed in updates
1. Not being able to save rage quit replays ( a huge major one)
2. Needing an SD card to take photos
3. Can't even go to homemenu at character select screen.
4. Stage builder ( another major one)
5. Correct me if I'm wrong but you didn't get banned on brawl when leaving a match.
6. Target blast replacing break the targets.

5 shouldn't be "fixed" at all. There needs to be some sort of punishment for rage quitting.

I miss the Brawl stage builder :(
me & my friends used to make giant boxes with the boxes that drop down on top and see who could ko the other person first. The only way to get out was to wait for items to drop on top.

These were the best stages.
Add Bumpers on High for the best experience :)

can't save rage quit replays? since when? every time someone sd's out of frustration I still have the option to save them.

if they d/c they're replaced with a lvl1 ai and the match continues. I'm pretty sure you can still save these replays

I believe he's referring to when you are playing offline and someone pauses and ends the match via the L R A Start buttons, it's impossible to save a replay when someone exits the match that way. I may be wrong but this is what I'm assuming

Ok but nintendo is too lazy to fix the online, you lag like hell. A 2 minute match takes 10 minutes.
You can just self-destruct.

It isn't very classy, but it means you won't get temp-banned and can immediately find another room at your discretion.

1. Not being able to save rage quit replays ( a huge major one)
Replays are a huge part of studying one's own play... very important. Doing well enough to make someone quit may be a sign that is the good stuff to study.

2. Needing an SD card to take photos

This one I really don't get... what benefit was there to this decision? With that said... memory these days is cheap enough where it isn't a massive issue.. but yea spending money sucks.

3. Can't even go to homemenu at character select screen.
Minor issue... but only time home menu should be blocked is when an exit would mess up save data, or something else.
4. Stage builder ( another major one)
The addition of the draw your own terrain would have been an excellent step forward... making it the only option (or close to it) was a step back for most of us... but some are good enough where they make better stuff than brawl would allow.
5. Correct me if I'm wrong but you didn't get banned on brawl when leaving a match.
Entering a game should be viewed as a commitment to see it to completion. Steps taken to keep people from quitting because they are mad are good things. With that said ... it sounds like the reporting system is really flawed. Idea step forward, but the exicution of it takes one step backward.

6. Target blast replacing break the targets.

Target blast... I see how that sounded fun in theory... but yea break targets was more fun... but that has been stepping back sense melee. Still only a small percentage of time is spent on this mode so minor issue.

Let me add my 2 cents:

Master Cores: All in all, a terribly designed fight.

3ds limitations: Ice climbers, zelda shiek combo rip... (and for wii you owners, loss of beloved stages.)

I also see some chances to move forward that were forgone... a better tournament mode, more player choice in online with anyone, ability to upload replays to youtube regardless of length (I would like the option to tell my console to upload it, then shut itself off when done if it is going to take a while.... can do that before I go to bed.). Online as a whole.. is well below reasonable expectations.

All and all however, I think with 8 player smash, better balance than brawl, elimination of random trips (seriously... who's freaking idea was that trash?), this is overall a step forward for the franchise.

No I'm taking about offline when playing with a friend and they end the game. You can't save those.

Isn't is possible to disable pausing so that can't happen?

It sucks that friends are going to rage quit where that is needed... but it looks like it is needed.

Of course that has it's downsides.

7. International matches online.

These are responsible for much of the input lag that plagues Sm4sh, which did not exist in Brawl (though that game had its own lag, just not input lag.) When they allow us to restrict all matches online to regional, a la Mario Kart 8, then maybe I'll actually play online outside of friend rooms. The added regional options in Tourney mode are a step in the right direction, but random For Glory / For Fun remains useless until they fix this.

Surely the biggest step back is the lack of a single player story mode!

Respectfully disagree... the idea behind sub space emissary would have made a great game if built from the ground up to be that.

The percentage damage system was way out of place for a game of that style... and made the difficulty scaling ridiculous. Furthermore... it didn't have much if anything in the way of replay value. (SSE on intense was very frustrating, and not at all fun.)(

I would love to see a mash up of franchises in a side scrolling beat em up game... but that game IMO should be separate from smash. Focus on making what makes this game great better.

Granted this is just my opinion, and there will be disagreements which is fine.

Well it could be like adventure from melee. I'm not fond of master core either. He's way too hard. Hard to dodge. I want something completely different but at the same time fun. Would be awesome.

I thought SSE was done very well; Smash Tour is an unhappy addition for me as I have no opportunity to play multiplayer, and I'll always prefer single player gaming anyway. It was nice to have a story, with bosses and a cohesive challenge. Its replay value may not have been huge, but more than anything we have in this iteration.

I agree about Master Core. I was able to beat Melee and Brawl on the highest levels, but can't get anywhere near it on this one because of Master Core.

I for one think that SSE was one of the funnest parts of Brawl. Granted, I wasn't a competitive player at the time.

A few of the biggest steps back:
- Robo Burner became slower.
- No semi Robo Burner mode where you can use your aerials and still fly using Robo Burner .
- Decreased Ftilt range.
- Gyro maxes out at 10% when charges, unlike SSBB where it maxed out at 18%.
- No SH Double Fair.
- Super Diffusion Beam is less fun to use than Diffusion Beam.

Another thing is the themes remixes. Brawl did a better job on the theme remixes. The only remixes I like are FD ver.2 and menu.
