Static issues

What is the likely culprit if after 20 seconds in the Project M menu the sound becomes loud obnoxious static and does not go away unless you go back to the title screen? It's like clockwork. 20 seconds after entering the menu from the title screen the static will start every time. But if I go back to the title screen the sound will return to normal. Weird...

I'm running hackless version 3.5 on a regular Wii.
