Starting Roster- just 20 characters?

OK, before anyone flames, me, I'd like you to look at this and seriously consider what I think I see here.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/characters/index.html

This character page has been around pretty much since the site opened. The boxes that the characters' pictures are placed in, unless I've wrong, have NOT changed in size since they appeared- if ANY of you know for sure, please tell me. If I'm right, that could mean that the spaces in these boxes, (the last one probably being filled by Solid Snake), were set up this way to show us ONLY the characters that the game comes with when you first start playing, or the starting roster.

The only real problem I see with this theory, however, is that it means we wouldn't be getting any more character updates until Sakurai decides to confirm secret characters- and I don't think anyone wants that to happen before the release date. So it could go either way, really. All I can say for sure is, 20 characters is a LOT to start with, almost too many in my opinion; too many more would be excessive.

Please give me your thoughts and theories, I look forward to my suggestion being ripped to shreds :chuckle:

First of all, Snake will be unlockable. Sakurai said all third party characters will be treated like "guests", therefore they will be unlockable.

Also, the size does change. When Pokemon Trainer was confirmed a whole new new rule was added. The same happened for Donkey Kong.

Do you mean a new ROW was added? If so then that pops my bubble pretty quickly. As for the Third Party characters being unlockable only, I'd never interpreted his comment in that way. It's an interesting though, to be sure. Thanks for your comment!

Oh yes, I meant ROW. Sorry, I just woke up. XD

I'm pretty sure that's what he meant. It is kind of odd that he hasn't give us a Snake update, is it not?

Yes ity does and i also remember hearing this same theory when zamus was shown they said that meta was the next char and so the dojo was done with the newcomers cuz there was just 1 remaining room.

Hmm. Guess I should have been paying more attention then ^_^;;;

As for the complete lack of a Snake update, well, that doesn't strike me as any more or less strange than the long standing lack of a Metaknight update. But only time will tell.

I'll be semi-"dead" for a while after Fe
Falcon will definately be a starter. Lucas might end up as the starter from the Mother series and Ness might go back to unlockable and Marth even has a chance as a starter if they have 3 FE reps. AC character of course, probably Krystal and another retro (Balloon Fighter/Little Mac) I'm geussing around 24 total to start.
The weird spacing dosen't really mean much and really won't when there are 40 + characters on the page.

Lucas - Krystal - Falcon - BF - Marth/LilMac - Smashkid

That's my best guess. Not so much hopes, but best guess.

Kyu Puff- THANK YOU. That right there was the definitive answer I was looking for. I have never been happier to be so completely owned.

What about Captain Falcon and Ness (who is in no way disproved as being included)? They were both starters in Melee. It makes sense that they'd be starters in Brawl.

In my opinion, the higher number the starter roster is, the more characters we'll get altogether.

We can probably expect to see Captain Falcon, Ness/Lucas, another Fire Emblem character, another Zelda character, and another Starfox character added to the starting roster, making it 24. If we're looking at 40 characters total, 24 starters seems about right.

In SSB, there were 8 starters and 4 unlockable (66% starters), and in Melee there were 14 starters and 11 unlockable (56%), so 24 starters (60%) is about right.

yeah, thats perfect, but i think there will be 45 or 50 considering all the nintendo characters that exist and the time taken to make the game, but maybe there just 40 and they are just balancing the roster a little more.
