I want to start hosting a weekly or bi-weekly around where I live, how should I approach potential venues?

1. Gather a Team
-You are going to need a Staff, don't try doing this alone is suicide. Get some friends or people wich want to make the smash community grow and let's get it started.
2. Make a Plan
-Where is it going to be hosted? How many people are going to enter? What is going to be the fee? How we will split the prize?
Decide all this with your team, think, discuss and speak it. I highly recommend on a Hotel, people feel more comfortable attending tournaments in a Hotel than in the backroom of an old Trading Card Shop (at least on my town). Since it's your first tournament (I'm assuming) aim it for a controled number of players I'll go for 32 or if you are feeling brave enough go for 64. I always recommend double-elimination, 2 of 3 games, 4 stock, 8 minutes because it's like a standar rules. Search the APEX or EVO rules and adapt them to your tournament.
3. Make a schedule
More T.V.s = Faster Tournaments.
It's just plain gross to play a match and have to wait 2 hours for a next one ; / . Count the number of players, assume how much time you'll think it will take each match and try to do a schedule. In my experience on a T.V. in about 1 hour it can be played 4 games. In a 32 players double elimination tournament there's about 55-60 matches in total ( or at least that's what i remember) so 4 games in 1 hour per T.V... you do the math.
4. Gather the Good's!
How much things you'll need, think of EVERYTHING
1 Set-up includes:
-T.V.
-GC/Wii/N64
-Table
-2 Chairs
-1 Power Outlet
How many set-ups are you gonna put? Do you need some extension cords? Some duct-tape so people are not tripping/disconnecting the cables? Is the crowd gonna be standed? 30 seats for the crowd? Think on ALL, ALL the things you'll need.
5. SPAM THAT ****AKE MUSHROOM!
SPAM SPAM SPAM
Get a designer (maybe a friend or someone who's trying to be it) and get a really cool, eye-catching poster/flyer and SPAM IT all over your Town. Wal-Mart's,Targets,Gamestop,Blockbuster,Grocery Stores,Pizza Hut, IDK SPAM THAT THING.
Aim for social medias too Facebook/Twitter is a good ally! use it wisely
6. Inside the Tournament
You and your Staff must know ALL the answers. Every staff member must know ALL the rules so the people can approach ANY staff member not just you and that other guy over there. Keep the Prize Money SAFE and don't withdraw money from the pot unless is necessary but always bring it back.
7. FUN
-Play, Wavedash, SHFFL, Shino-Stall, Cry, Comeback and Laugh! (It's for FUN right?)
8. PRO TIPS
Here are the TOP 5 Cheese Shogun PRO TIPS!
-1) Take photos of the Tournament, it's way easier to get sponsor if you show them photos/videos of the last tournament.
-2) The Staff NEVER wins the Tournament, you just wanna play, but some people will see it as a way of scamming the for their money like if you organized a whole tournament just to get their money (Bad experiences ; ( )
-3) LOYAL STAFF, do you know how many times half of my Staff let me down on the big-dad? Lot's of times because they "forget it was today" 5 Loyal Staff > 15 Slacker's of Staff that's true. Any-time, Any-day.
-4) Put some Extra Set-ups some people are going to loose both of his matches in less than 1 hour that's a fact, why would they want to spend another 5 hours just watching people play? Put some extra set-ups so people can play for fun or some money-matches. Believe people will thank your for that
-5) Put some papers and pens along with a Feedback Box at the Exit Door. You'll get bad feedback that's almost a law of nature but don't dispair you can't get all the people happy. Some will say their brackets where more harder, the T.V. had lag, Controller Malfunction BLAH BLAH. But I can assure you will also get good feedback wich will help you to improve your next tournament.
GOOD MOOD EXTRA TIP! (Insert here the "I'm a Generous God Meme")
-6) 32 players + 5 Staff + 10 friends of contestants = LOT'S of People in a Room! Get some AC, some Fans or just roll Up the Windows so you guys can play in a better way. Just imagine 50 people in a room of 10x10m, all the human odor, all the sweat, all the yells YUCK! Believe me in this a small breeze of a good old fan can completely change the player mood.
