Specifically, what stages are used, how to stage strike in P:M, and just the general function of stage striking. I'm going to my first tournament soon and entering the P:M bracket and I would like to be prepared for it.

Stage striking is the only confusion I have as I can't find any clear explanation how it works, especially with P:M. If anybody knows any good explanations about Stage Striking, I would appreciate being directed to that page/thread.

Thanks in advance!

I'm toats surprised it's not covered in a wiki. I thought stage striking was just a fancy way to say "pick a set of stages that favor your character by taking ones that don't favor your character off the list" or something to that effect? Maybe someone can clarify it in a super simple way. :|

The one I visited used the "1-2-2-1"-Striking-Method for choosing the Starter Stage. Basically, the two players determine a "winner" and a "loser" by, for example, a game of 'rock-paper-scissor'.

The "loser" now strikes one stage from the starter-stages, the third row including YS, Battlefield, PKS2, FD, Smashville, Dreamland and FoD. Oh also press Y on the Gamecube Controller for highlighting the starters only.
Let's say the "loser" strikes Yoshi' Island, now the "winner" has to strike two stages, Smashville and Dreamland for example. After that the "loser" strikes another two, FoD and Final Destination. Now there are two stages left, Pokemon Stadium 2 and Battlefield. The "winner" now gets to choose between these two for the actual Starter-Stage.

The counterpick depends on the tournament ruleset, I think. Most of the time, from what I've seen on stream, the first row, including Metal Cavern, Halberd, Castle Siege, Norfair, Dracula's Castle and Rumble Falls, are banned and cannot be counterpicked.
On TheBigHouse3 for example, Dracula's Castle was still counterpickable but Skyloft and Skyworld weren't while being in the second row.

The Winner of the match played on the Starter-Stage now bans three possible-counterpick stages and/or starter stages, since they are still possible to choose from the Loser of the first match. As always there is the 'Dave's Stupid Rule'.

Also, all the Stage Striking should be done with the current Matchup in mind - you don't want to pick a big stage against Peach etc.
