Stage shortage; What gives?

Does anyone else find it rather odd how we're this close to release and we still don't have that many new stages? We're still stuck on the same few that we've always had. And this goes for both games.

Sure, there were a few right before E3, but even those felt like hasty attempts at getting them up in time for the E3 demos. And it shows how behind they really are in terms of showing us all the stages. And sure, Pac-Man got his, but even that was just because of him.

We're still lacking in the following:
New DK stages (preferably DKCR)
New Kirby stages
Star Fox stages
Yoshi stages
3DS Metroid stage
Wario stages
Mother/EB stages
Even a Rhythm Heaven stage!*
And more

It really didn't help how April's Smash Direct announced only one new stage at the time and forgot all about another one announced before it (Tomodachi Life). Speaking of which, when are we going to see that one again? The Direct also had a few music samples from DKCR, Kirby, and Star Fox.

*This might be announced with the Rhythm Heaven character in their trailer.

Perhaps some are being left a surprise for either the next Direct which shall be next month or much like Brawl, I feel there will simply be a handful of stages that we just won't know about till the Japanese get their copy of Sm4sh and that goes for both versions! ;)

I do agree that it's a bit odd how we still haven't seen at least any Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Metroid, Kirby, Starfox, Sonic and Megaman stage for the 3DS version despite that the game is just about right around the corner. Oh well, like pickle962 said, they might be saving that all (or at least most of it) up for the next Direct perhaps....

It's also a bit odd that we haven't seen any other past stages besides Jungle Japes for the 3DS version yet either..... (Or Halbert for the Wii U version for that matter)

I feel like it would be awkward to announce Wario and Mother stages without any of their characters being confirmed, so I can understand that, but the rest are pretty inexcusable.

Before Marth and the others showed up, Fire Emblem got a stage on Smash 3DS first. You don't remember that?

There is no "A must show up before B" rule. This has been happening all the time here.

I find the lack of new Star Fox, DK, Kirby, and Yoshi stages especially surprising. Those series are practically guaranteed to have a character in the starting roster (if not more than one), so there should be an unlocked stage for those series for Classic mode. I would hope we'll get to at least see all the starting stages before release, but with only 40 pictures until release in Japanand the fact that they won't all be stages, either a Direct needs to show a bunch or there will be lots of surprises.

I know.

Also, the Halberd appeared before Meta Knight, even if it is a returning Brawl stage. (You don't normally associate that stage with Dedede or Kirby, shut up)

I bet it'll be a Sonic Rush stage.

I'm guessing during this direct, we may get a new kirby stage, tied with the release of Meta Knight and Bandana Dee. Probably a return to dreamland stage, as that is the only game where all 4 kirby reps are playable.

Meta Knight should not return in my opinion. He can be an assist trophy, but that's that.

Why not? The Kirby series has very few reps as it is and just because he was overpowered in one game doesn't mean he'll be that way in the next one. Just look at Pikachu from 64 to Melee and Fox from Melee to Brawl.

At this moment, there are 17 confirmed stages for the 3DS version

And 16 stages for the Wii U version
So, there are more stages confirmed for the 3DS version, then for the Wii U one. If the stage shortage was only valid for the 3DS version, we should start worrying about this version potentially having gimped content, but since both versions have very few confirmed stages, we shouldn't really worry... yet. It is kinda odd that more stages weren't confirmed. Perhaps some of them would spoil certain newcomers? Then again, both versions will have "returning stages" like Jungle Japes, so Idk why Sakurai doesn't show some of them via miiverse updates/pictures of the day.

I don't see why Meta Knight should not return? I mean, I don't like Kirby that much (the games bore me to death), but it is a popular series and it deserve three reps in Smash (and not more than three reps!). Meta Knight should totally return.

Most of the stages are probably still in development, which may explain why we haven't seen any additional ones yet.

I highly doubt we will be short on stages in either version's final release. I DO think they should have/reveal some more both-system stages, almost all of the current ones are platform exclusive.

Yeah, at this point the game is already complete, they are likely fixing possible glitches and bugs here and there.

As of now, both the 3DS version and the Wii U version have the same amount / number of stages. Maybe some haven't beeen revealed yet because they might be unlockable. It's getting the final touches at the moment, by mid-August, the game is practically finished.

To avoid confusion, let me give an example.

3DS has 50 stages based on handheld games.
Wii U has 50 stages based on console games.

i think that some 3ds stages will be revealed before the 3ds release the rest will be secret stages i think that the 3ds will have the same amount of stages than brawl or a little more

I don't think Sakurai is trying to hide anything this time though, since he has been revealing the newcomers to us. I doubt that all of the confirmed fighters will be available right off the bat.

I seriously want sakurai to leave A LOT of surprises for the launch of the game. If this includes 50% of the stages, I'd be overjoyed!

Hmm, I see. I'm just guessing stuff. Maybe he'll reveal the stages as time goes by. Maybe some new details on Pyrosphere and Wily's Castle + familar stages? Don't know. And yeah, same, some characters need to be unlockable.

Brinstar Depths for 3DS with Kraid as a boss. Nintendo, make it happen.
I would rather have Frigate Orpheon on the 3DS and Brinstar Depths on the Wii U. I have two reasons for that: One is because Frigate Orpheon is my favorite Metroid stage in Smash Bros, so I want it in the version I am buying. The second is because I really want to see Kraid in HD.

I'm very sure there are more stages. Anyway, I want Fountain of Dreams, Dreamland 64, Pokemon Stadium Melee, and Hyrule Castle in Smash 3DS.

Finally, a new Star Fox stage. (Actually, I'm having a hard time calling this one "new")

Still more to go.

Well there's a new Starfox stage. I expect a Kirby stage to be revealed soon.

Yeah, but it is the Wii U stage. I am interested in the 3DS ones. It would be cool to have Sector Z in the 3DS version.

As for Kirby, something based on Triple Deluxe, maybe?

Everything post-Pokemon X/Y can't make it into this Smash. There's still nothing from Super Mario 3D World and A Link Between Worlds either.

As for a Kirby stage, Return to Dream Land is more likely. The Lor Starcutter, in particular.
