I played my first event tonight (warp wednesdays at Bsides, cleveland Oh.) and noticed that there is a very small regular pool of available stages. Before the event even begins, most of the stages are made unavailable. With poke stadium becoming available after the first 2/3. When did this become the norm, and why? Is it event specific? Thank you.

These rules have been settled for a few years now. Most stages are banned due to hazards, walls, walk-offs, or lack of ledges.

Pokemon stadium is a counter pick due to the transitions having walls, making it more favourable to certain characters on certain matchups. These are the official tournament rules.

It can seem silly to newcomers, but this way players can show their skills at full potential without nuisances from external aspects of the fight.
