Cross-post from something I wrote on Facebook, by request.

STAGE LIKE SYSTEM
- Recommended odd number of stages
- Player 1 elects a stage. Player 2 may decline.
- If declined, Player 2 elects another stage. Player 1 may decline.
- Continue this process until an elected stage has been agreed upon or only one stage remains.

EXAMPLES:

P1: Yoshi's Story
P2: decline, Fountain of Dreams
P1: decline, Yoshi's Story
P2: agree
1st game Yoshi's Story

P1: Dream Land
P2: decline, Fountain of Dreams
P1: decline, Final Destination
P2: decline, Yoshi's Story
P1: decline
1st game Battlefield

P1: Battlefield
P2: agree
1st game Battlefield

This is mostly the same as a striking system. When you strike a stage, you're saying "I do not want to play on this stage". Each player removes a stage that disadvantages them in some way, or gives their opponent an advantage, until only 1 stage is left. Most players have some idea of who is benefited by what stage, so I can only see this as a stage strike by another name.

we should just incorporate the Japanese tier stages, cuz no one is gonna allow jank stages when they're 2-0 at a b05.

Well, for starters, that's completely off-topic. Second, if one player has to waste their bans on jank, they can't use their bans on something that's not jank. Say, for example, that every stage is legal, and your opponent is good at using the really janky ones against you. Let's also say that this is a :4falcon: player. You can either ban the jank or ban Battlefield, and either results in a pretty BS match, because it requires you to either waste a ban or deal with the shenanigans of a match between casuals.

This was a system I originally built because people kept starting sets off with, instead of striking stages, "Want to just play on Smashville?"/"Want to just play on Battlefield?" This seeks to take that behavior and create a legitimate ruleset out of it.

In addition, there are subtle differences between this and stage striking, the main two being that you're not directly revealing what you don't want to play on to the opponent on your selection; and stage selection does not need to eliminate down to the final stage of a list, making things such as Full List Stage Selection with a larger number of stages much more practical.
