I think Kirbykid had a good post a while back on the smashblog about how items need to have spawn points and not just appear randomly out of the sky wherever they please. It certainly would be better for everyone, giving players the opportunity to build strategies based on what items spawn where.
Well Sakurai just released a new mode yesterday called Stage Builder, and I've been pondering something; how will items spawn on this stage? Will it be like any stage where they spawn randomly all over the stage, or will you have options within the stage builder to set spawn points for certain items (kind of like Forge in Halo 3).
I mean there has got to be a way to set characters' starting points for when the match begins (unless it randomly selects a flat surface for characters to start on...but that would be lame). So why not add in where you want items to spawn? That could definitely give your stage more depth.
For example, you could build a small "cage" that's blocked off by walls on 3 sides, but doesn't have a ceiling so you can jump into it, although it's very high up and hard to reach. In this "cage" you could set a hammer spawn so anyone lucky to get in there would get a hammer.
There is definitely a lot of potential for this...
