First of all, I think this is a very important thread if the material here hasn't been covered yet, because the issue is quickly approaching us.

Once both games are released, all TOs who plan on featuring SSB4 at their tournaments will have to make an important decision - 3DS or Wii U or both?

Here is a flow chart regarding the options:

3DS ---------> more people have system, game will have been out longer (could be important), does not require setups.

Wii U --------> people more familiar with controls, easier to spectate and stream, possibly the favorite.

-------> players can only enter one ----> one event will not be competitive because the top players will either split or all agree to do one.
Both-------
-------> players can enter both -----> both events will be dominated by the same players, more space/time required.

So, IMO, for a tournament like Apex 2015, 3DS only would be the way to go because the Wii U version will have been barely out, and space and time are crucial for a tournament that size. (I swear, if I hear the words "fire hazard" ever again...)

But what do you think? I feel like we at least must come to a consensus as a community, whichever option we choose.

Yes.

To answer your question anyway, I think tournaments on the scale of Apex may even be willing to do both. Otherwise, I'm sure it will depend on the size, scale and space.

I think both should be done, the metagame isn't going to be exactly the same due to the different stages. Not only that, but managing 3DS tournaments won't be as difficult as Wii U due to everyone essentially owning and bringing their own "set", that being their 3DS and copy of the game.

There would only be a need for one dedicated 3DS for the stream, everyone else can just connect with each other to play, unless tons of wireless connections like this were to cause some sort of interference? I don't know.

Another thing that needs to be considered is the ruleset, and from a tournament Tourney Locator ran yesterday, Swiss Round with 2-stocks in a Bo3 format seems to work best for this game, because despite having combo potential to an extent vaguely close to Melee's, the launch power behind most attacks makes it impossible to perform follow-ups sometimes, and coupled with the fact that blast zones are MASSIVE in the viable stages, KOs take quite some time to get. Matches can even get to time-out depending on the MU, as well as the player's or players' playstyle(s).

How do you spectate a 3ds match? It's gonna get weird watching 50+ people huddle around a player, Wii U imo, both would take up too much time

Hook up a 3DS with the capture kit, which will be displayed on the computer picking it up. Hook up that computer to some big monitor or TV that's capable of sharing the screen. It's not impossible.

I think that both should be hosted for reason like some people would only play the 3DS and some people would only play the Wii U stuff like that. Plus it would be a better and more hype tourney IMO.
