Since all battles in spectate mode run flawless, I presume Nintendo stores the data of all matches we are playing online, and instead of watch the matches in real time, we are actually just downloading some stored replay data of some random online match to watch.
We have no lag in spectate mode, and if it was in real time, the lag that players had on their match would be transfered to the spectators too, I think. Not that it changes anything, but it's just a curiosity.
You know.. since there are thousands of battles happening all the time, it would be just a huge luck that one of our fights were selected to be watched by someone. That said, wouldnt be something cool if we had some notification that our match was watched by some player? Even with no objective at all to it.. I remember in Mario Odyssey or Mario Maker, receiving notifications that someone played my level or found a ballon that I hided, and it felt something special.
Since spectate mode in this game is so downgraded to provide just this basic random replay with no interactivity at all (like in Smash 4 that had that cool bet feature), I think it would be cool to have some more improvements to it.
And well, if they are storing all the data from all the online matches (at least for some time), why cant they offer a menu to select what kind of game you want to watch instead of goes all random? It would be just a small effort to make it better, like preffered rules (mandatory in the case), for Spectate Mode. I really like to watch 1v1 matches, cause I think I learn a lot watching players fighting in a serious way, but I see no point in watch free for all matches with items... And Spectate Mode is totally random, so I'm almost never able to watch the kind of match that I like, so... I just go to Youtube, instead of using the game tools that could be even better.
