Sound Effects

Very few people talk about this subject in video games but sound effects are very important. They can make the simple action of hopping on a Goomba sound delightful with that "woobup" sound they make.

Anyway in Smash Bros sound is very important too. From a simple slap to a big explosion. However I felt Brawl was severely lacking in the SFX department. They lacked the OOMPH that makes a blow to the face sound really painful. Attacks sounded more muffled and softer than before.

On top of this the audience watching you fight was far more quiet in Brawl. In the first game and Melee, the people would cheer and gasp all the time at the action. It made the battle more epic hear the people scream in delight as you blast your foe into oblivion.

Finally, the characters themselves were far less vocal than they used to be. You'd hear Mario "yahoo" and "yipee" a lot more in older titles. Why did everyone become more quiet?

So that makes me wonder about this game. So far from the footage I've seen it seems the sound effects are pretty much the same. I hope that's only because it was early footage.
What do you guys think? I want to hear some WHAM and BAM in my action! I want the audience to gasp and clap at my antics. I want to hear my character grunt and wail in pain!

Really? If I heard correctly, the majority of the sound effects have changed since what was used in Brawl. They sound more, for lack of a better word, powerful. For example: The sound of you launching someone into a pit or the side of the screen sounds more satisfying now IMO. From what was shown anyways

I agree that sound effects are important in games, and are critical in Smash. I really loved the exaggerated loud noises in Smash 64 and some of the goofy ways the characters sounded as they jump around and fought (Mario being my all time favorite). One thing Brawl did well on was making character specific sound effects for their attacks, but the impacts of the hits were dull. One of my favorite sounds in Smash 4 so far is the sound of Samus' forward tilt (2:16)

It seems like some of the sounds are pretty good. But some of them are still disappointing. Like when the Villager drops a bowling ball down the impact isn't as heavy sounding as I hoped.

There's still the issue of the characters being less vocal. Mario uses his voice about the same amount as in Brawl.

Well take into consideration that this is from an early build and still uses some sound bites from Brawl is a placer possibly, hopefully there is a broader range of sounds.

As for the sounds on hit, I have always loved the sounds from older 2D fighting games, in particular Marvel vs. Capcom. Something about the sounds of landing those hits is just so immensely satisfying.

I'm really hoping new voices are recorded for this game and aren't recycled from Brawl.

^This. I absolutely agree.

This is a good video to heard them:

Let see:
0:06 good weak-hit SFXs
0:12 strong hits sounds like explosions... i dont know if i like those...
Also i another video slash SFX are heard, and those sounds good.

Overall, im ok with the new SFXs, and are better than Brawls imo.

In terms of sound effects, I'd prefer Bowser to get Kenny James as a voice actor, but DK and Diddy to stay with wild animal noises. I know that Koopaul doesn't like this aspect of their characters in Brawl, but I think it would be equally horrible to have them become Scooby Kong and Mousey Kong instead. Something akin to their N64 voices would be ideal, but goodness knows that'll never happen.

Agreed. Bowser with an actual voice gives him a lot more character. It makes him seem more like an intelligent being and less like a mindless reptile.

I didn't like DK's modern voice when I first heard it, but I've gotten used to it by now and it works. It fits his character more than generic animal sounds.

Scooby Kong is tolerable to me within the context of games like Returns, where he's really not making too much Scooby noise aside from the beginnings and ends of levels. But this is Smash Bros., a game where he'd be constantly making Scooby noises with each singular attack, both dealt and received; it'd be all the horrible hamminess of Punch Out!! DK, all the bloody time. It's not funny, and not remotely fitting for a brute like DK, even less so than gorilla noises on, you know, a cartoon gorilla. Takashi Nagasako should get the hell away from DK yesterday; stick to voicing Ganondorf and actually not sounding godawful for a change.

My two cents, probably better off at home in the Unpopular Opinions thread when this thread is supposed to be about all the clinking and clanking that attacks do instead.

I laughed so hard at "Scooby Kong." Is that a popular fan-made name or did you just make that up? Cuz that's freakin' hilarious.

It's been a semi-recurring name on fansite DKVine for quite some time that I take pleasure in using here to drive home how unpleasant the idea of Scooby Kong in Smash would be.

Yeah I like realistic-gorilla-sounding DK a lot better.

i think they want to make SSB4 for all audiences including younger children, and kids these days are all lil wimploads but i agree, i get so much satisfaction in melee when they start cheering for you, you just turn around to your friends and your all like, OH YEAH! WHO THEY CHEERING FOR?? WHO??!

Generic animal grunts give DK no personality. So yes I'd like to have "Scooby Kong" in the game. But think about it, DK sounded alright in Donkey Kong Country Returns right?

I said it above, but DK was okay in Returns because, aside from the occasional grunt upon jumping or throwing a barrel, he doesn't really make that much noise. Compare that to his other fighting game foray in Punch Out!!, where the developers go out of their way to give him the most over-the-top Scooby noises possible; that's personally what I'd like to avoid in Smash. Hopefully Sakurai won't take it that far if he goes for the modern VA.

that would be ok with me, just please
please
oh god PLEASE
do NOT make him like in Mario Party 8.
GOOD CHRIST THAT WAS IRRITATING.

Anyways, anyone else here think the Mario characters should speak a little more in phrases? Like Mario should say "Yippie!" and "Yeah!" rather than just the little grunt sounds he had in Brawl. For instance, I don't think Wario even said a single understandable English word, yet in his games he talks in full sentences. Peach said things like "This is fun!" and "Aww, did I win?" so why can't the other characters?

And I'm not saying overdo it, just maybe for victories and taunts the characters could be a little more vocal.
