Something to Think About

So, this might be a little conspiracy thinking, but...

1.) Sm4sh seems to be playing off of the Brawl engine.
2.) When Brawl was in its infancy, some people said it was playing off of a Melee, or Melee like engine.
3.) Gannondorf hasn't been confirmed. (Yet)
4.) During the Best Buy games, Gannondorf was apparently picked by accident using random.

So, could there be a chance that this is literally playing off of a Brawl engine? As in the demo was simply something thrown out with tweaked Brawl physics, ect, some new characters thrown in and all that? Is there a chance that Sm4sh could be as vastly different from Brawl as Brawl was from Melee?

I know Gannondorf was in Melee, but just the fact that he hasn't been confirmed yet, but showed up by accident on the random selection for characters, and I'm almost wondering if the demo was actually Brawl, just modded to showcase some potential changes.

I dunno, just a theory.

Ganondorf evidence?

Well, I wouldn't be surprised.
Though I still think it's just an unfinished physics engine (or an earlier one picked because it's more stable).

Ganondorf evidence?
Yeah there is none it's just Amazing Ampharos saying a friend of his claimed another friend picked "Random" and as a glitch it gave him Ganondorf.

Yeah it sounds like a chunk of bull**** heaven but apparently that's credible enough.

I'm pretty sure it was stated that Ganondorf was glitchy and did not mesh well with the game's mechanics, implying that more has changed than we can see but also implying that they do have ported Brawl characters that they are working from.

Assuming it's true, of course.

Modded version of Brawl or not, that's the game we're getting in a few months.
Want to elaborate on this bait-like constructed sentence?

It is whole-fully apparent in many ways that the game is subject to change in many categories, and we can even see see those changes in some cases. Developers even making comments about "...in this build..." etc...

Lying about my country.
Why would they create a completely different thing in an old engine just for a demo? Seems like a gigantic waste of development resources.

Doubt this thing has anything to do with Brawl's engine either way, they might have started off by recreating Brawl's engine, but I really doubt Smash 4 is some sort of modified port or anything.

My comment wasn't bait. The game will have subtle differences here and there, but if you're expecting significant changes 2 months away from launch you're in for a surprise.

Well I'm fine with that since I love what I see. *shrug

Given the fact that the transition from Wii to Wii U for Nintendo's own developpement team was a mess and both hardware are extremely different I don't think smash4 is using brawl's engine.

To be fair, evidence has been found which suggests that the demo is probably a early build, like pre-Direct early. So a lot could actually change from the build used in the demo to what we see at final release.

What, from the demo you mean?

I mean, that build was proven to be compiled at the latest in March (unless they reverted a lot of the changes/improvements seen in the April direct). I don't think they will be able to reconstruct the entire product at this point, but I would think that even the build they were playing in June is astronomically improved over what we ourselves were playing at the same time. If the 3DS version ships in Japan in mid September, they basically have two months to make a lot of small adjustments. As long as they are not trying to crank in new content (stages, characters, modes), they have time to adjust based on feedback if they deem it necessary. No jarring changes to game mechanics, of course, but still statistical changes none-the-less.

wait how exactly was it proven to be compiled at the latest in march? Are you talking about the differences in megamans FS?

Some of the things in in this thread. I mean, gosh, the direct was on April 8. Getting all that footage, editing, revising, reviewing, editing, revising, reviewing, localizing, revising, reviewing, will take over a week.

If what we saw was truly a build compiled in March, more changes are definitely possible than I initially suggested. Like you said, it won't be anything major, but there would be time to make enough tweaks to make a fairly significant difference. I don't suspect it'll be that much different, but it gives me a slightly new perspective on the matter.

Sounds like a bit cheap to throw us a modded Brawl instead of a demo of Smash 4. After all, they wanted us to play it to get feedback.
Having said this, it is very likely we are getting some big changes to reflect that feedback. That was not a case of "hey guys here is the game, if you don't like it, that is too bad. Its coming out in a few months". Im pretty sure that they are getting out some last moment changes here and there. Two months for polishing, one for "going gold". What is probably already done is the entire roster and game modes. Any extra characters might come out in DLC according to leaks after all.
And about that Ganondorf thing... engh, lets say I believe more in the Chunky Kong AT.

As far as level of quality is concerned (bugs, sound, visuals, etc.), if a build is compiled in March, it will be even worse than the product they are operating at the time that build was compiled.

This will happen because we are not playing the same game they had at this time, but rather, an allocation of assets designed for public play. There are times where the game will be looking for something, say, a sound effect or response rule, and that asset exists outside of a character. Thus the game can hitch up, respond incorrectly, or not respond at all. For example, it is possible that the Ore Club was created from the code used for the Star Rod. While the sound effects for the Ore Club could have been done ages ago, the demo build could still be trying to draw from the sound effects used for the Star Rod, hence why it will play the wrong sounds.

This won't affect character balance too much, but worth keeping in mind when we see the demo behave in strange ways or crash.

For reference, when Treehouse talks about Mario in the demo build not being as good as the Mario they are playing as right now, or how their favourite characters to play as have not been revealed, it of course suggests a rather dated and limited build. They probably receive what Sakurai wants people playing in March or April, and then between localization and distribution, they will take over a month to get what we got to play for less than a week in June.
