If you watch the developer direct, in the Wii U version of the game Bowser, Mario and Mega Man are all actually actually inverted when they switch directions rather than flipped around. Unimportant detail... just something I noticed.

Oh yeah....instead of turning their whole body, they just turn their heads. Cool detail.

We mean when someone turns the other way. They don't really turn their whole body around. They just move their head, or mirror the way they were before.

I think it might be a nod to how older 2D fighting games mirrored character sprites when the characters turned around to save memory.

Not all characters do that. Pit doesn't do that and I'm sure Samus and Link don't do it either.

I don't see any characters models being mirrored or flipped, at least from what I've seen in the 3DS footage. Whenever they face left, their back is towards the camera, and whenever they face right, you see their front, that way they always have their dominant side (Right Hand or Left Hand) in front ready to strike their opponent, but hasn't it always been this way? If they were being mirrored or flipped then wouldn't they always be facing towards the camera?

EDIT: Oh on the Wii U version they always face towards the camera, that's so lazy! Hope they fix this, except for maybe Megaman who it actually makes sense with.

I made an image for people who don't understand. In Brawl, Mario's back faced the camera when he was facing left, in SSBU he's just mirrored.

It's odd. It's like a mirror effect, but it's still not. Mega Man's arms aren't mirrored, but his idle pose makes it appear to be. I like the touch, personally.

It seems like it's just a stylistic choice in order to display frontal detail as often as possible. Back in the sprite days, characters were drawn slightly facing toward the camera rather than a straight profile, despite the fact that it didn't really make sense in the context of their movement (that is to say, they'd technically be walking in a constant slight sidestep if facing that angle in reality). They do that because frontal details are more descriptive.

I've always assumed that the only reason that past Smash games had characters facing away from the character when facing left is because it's easier to just rotate the model 180 degrees rather than essentially give them a different idle animation for 2 directions—whereas in sprites, it's easiest to just flip the image, which is why handedness was often ambiguous in sprite games.

So it would seem that they're going the extra mile with Smash 4. It's the little details that count, right?

So no. This isn't being lazy. This is actually more work than what they did in all the past games. Flipping a model's animation in relation to the direction in which they are technically facing is more work than rotating the model in the space and having them face away. It also requires that they have 2 different animations for turning around.

But in the 3DS version all characters rotate 180 degrees when switching directions.

It makes sense for characters like Megaman and Mario to be versatile with both hands anyway. I thought they were just flipping the character models for everyone like they were 2D sprites, until I saw that Link always keeps his shield in front and Pit keeps the same hand in front. I wonder if I'll miss seeing Mario's back or Bowser's shell.

It's more economical to just do the rotation, but it doesn't look as nice. Perhaps on the 3DS, there's a slightly higher concern for saving memory.

This usually happens in many 2D fighting games, especially Street Fighter and MVC series. I can imagine Samus's cannon is on her left arm.

I've noticed 3DS characters aren't "mirrored", while in the Wii U version some characters are mirrored and others aren't. Things like Samus' cannon or Link's sword won't change arm. Strangely, Villager's back faces the player when he faces left. Maybe it isn't final?

I'm hoping that the final ones are the one that are always facing the camera. I always hated the fact that the characters faced away from the camera..

And guess what? Capcom is apart of this game as well. I'd like to think they're helping out as well and not just having Mega Man thrown in there.

Capcom isn't helping develop this game. The only involvement they've had is collaborating on Mega Man's character and moveset design. That's the extent of it.

Also, things like this are largely a design decision on the part of a single person or handful of people. I highly doubt that Namco's involvement has any impact on this presentational choice, as Namco's role is to provide help in determining how the game plays, as well as a workforce of people who can bring character designs and stages to fruition.

Do you have a source stating that? Because I would imagine that the terms upon which Capcom and Nintendo agreed was more than just a slip of paper that says "Yes, you may include Mega Man." Companies are very particular about the way their intellectual property is portrayed. That's why fangames are often shut down when they reach a very large scale with decently large exposure. At the very least, Sakurai's team would have to present a Character Design Proposal to Capcom and get their approval.

I'm not sure I like it :p. I use back-airs so much and I'm used to the normal animations, this might throw me off. OH WELL I'LL GET USED TO IT

Which is why I said I'd like to think they're helping out. Kind of sucks that they're not.

Holy crap! This game doesn't look even slightly done! Why if i didn't know any better I'd say it has at least another year's worth of development left! It wasn't just this detail either; did any of you notice that they completely forgot to show Ridley?! What a blunder!!

It would be pretty cool if we have the option of choosing the sorta mirrored versions or how it was in Brawl. I always enjoyed taking snapshots and this could add an extra element to that mechanic.

Can't say I'm a fan of this new direction. The rotation method in the other games seems more natural and makes more sense. This is too stage presence-y.

Not that I'll ever notice or anything.

Well! If the villager is being mirrored I hope so will his painted eyes. Or it would results that when he is facing left his eyes would be looking directly into camera.
