Something funny regarding the competitive scene...

Despite Sakurai's attempts to decrease the gap between highly-skilled and low-skilled players both in Brawl and Smash U, and specifically trying to lean more towards casual play while paying minimal service to competitive players in the latter, this game has a fairly successful competitive scene (as of now).

Meanwhile, Tecmo tried to get Dead or Alive 5 to get accepted as a serious tournament-worthy fighter by taking away attention from the fanservice and adding depth to the game, yet they have largely failed at their goal and have instead gone back to fanservice pandering.

Smash is far more popular than DoA, though. And even though Sakurai has succeeded in reducing the technical gap between skill levels, there's still far more knowledge and experience that goes into playing Smash well (that a lot of people tend to deny or ignore). We're in no threat of a beginner beating an experienced player, since technique isn't the only thing that matters.

But DOA5 introduced a whole bunch of stuff while Smash U took out quite a bit of stuff that was even in Brawl.

Something's not right with the FGC.

Smash has mass appeal. It's built on cartoon character franchises that are tried and true.

DOA is built on creepy uncanny valley sex appeal and generic characters. It doesn't matter how fantastic your gameplay is if it's still generic ***** monster #1 versus generic ***** monster #2.

People on the street actually care about characters like Mario, Link, Pikachu, Donkey Kong, etc. I'd go so far as to say that any successful fighting game needs iconic characters. Marvel Vs. Capcom, Street Fighter, Soul Calibur (though they've tried to kill their own franchise by endlessly re-imagining or replacing their icons), Tekken, and to a lesser extent, Skullgirls and Guilty Gear. All of them have a somewhat unique visual style, gameplay quirks, but most importantly, iconic characters. People want heroes and villains and unique characters to get involved with.

For years, DOA branded itself as a game for sad and pathetic weebs to jack off to, with beach volleyball, swimsuit collecting, and one-handed control schemes (no joke). That's not the way you get to Smash status. I think a lot of people still hold that stigma for DOA. That's what they built their brand into. So don't be surprised if trying to sell their generic characters in a serious fighting game in a crowded market met with tepid reception. They'll keep going for the soft porn angle and people like me will continue to ignore them.

Just sayin', Mortal Kombat didn't get any Competitive FGC respect until MK9 despite being known for nothing but blood and guts.

It's not like it's impossible to break out of a "Just Here for X" stigma.
