Hello all, im new to smash bros. I just picked it up today for my wii u and started playing it. One problem, i SUCK. Now, is it really one of those things that practice makes perfect type of things? I really do have some horrible reaction time atm and using a Wii U pro controller. Tried a few different characters and my favorite are definitely Link and Meta Knight. Any advice for a first time smash player?

It's definitely a practice type game.
The only real basic tip I can give you right now is hit Training, get a feel for how your character moves, get a feel for how you use your specials and how to time them properly.
For now your best bet is to get really good as one or two characters; the basics you learn from them will carry over to the rest for the most part.
Don't forget everyone plays different and even if you come across someone playing the same character; they likely play that character different from you as well.
It's a deep game, work at it! :)

I reckon you start at a lowish difficulty and build up from there when you feel you are ready for it to higher difficulties. Once you've done that a bit and have mastered the basics of the game you can then vs your friends. Of cause vs the bots (in any single player mode) is no real practice for vsing your friends, but you'll have learnt the basics of the game which is essential I think before you vs your friends.

[edit] This is a good topic to read also.

The Smash Dictionary is a must read.

Well Smash 4 is definitely a good place to start. I guess some guidelines would be to do your research on characters you want to play, and experiment with them in friendlies. Lots of Smash players get a notebook to mark things you can improve upon or that are just worth noting. Examples of stuff you'd record would be proper spacing or combos that work, or moves that have good follow ups. It's also great to see common attack patterns of other characters, and common moves they use. (In this game, Marth's tippered FSmash and Sheik's UAir are notable kill moves for example) You do have to practice, and it is preferable to practice alone for tech skill and stuff, but friendlies are great. You don't have to post in the boards a lot, but you meet a lot of good people because of it. I met so many people online and even in real life when I went to a tournament!! And there are several others I played online (and will play online again one day @PATH O__o @CaptainKirby @Metalbro !!!!!) You meet a lot of good people here, and several are quite knowledgeable about the game. It's good to practice and find a good set of people to practice with

Well, i've been practicing a bit against cpu's in regular smash mode or w/e, i can see why people love this game =]. I've been playing with meta knight mainly, and have been getting first-second place against cpu's lvl 6-7 so far. Yet to try any multiplayer. Rather scared to =[
