On Pokemon Snap, after a short while, you gain a throwing item that is kind of like a smoke ball. It releases a puff of smoke, then disappears.

Could this be where Sakurai got the idea?

Doubt it. Snap isn't the only game using smoke, and it doesn't even function the same. There are other games where the smoke actually hinders your sight too, besides Brawl now.

No, the symbol for the smoke ball is the smash symbol. Besides, the thing in Snap is called the Pester Ball. :/
