So, I want to be a pro at Melee. What do I start learning first?

I used to play Smash 4, but I got fed up with its slow and defensive style. I still enjoy it, but Melee just plays so much better. The thing is though, I'm not a pro or anything, I'm just a casual. But I'd love to be a pro. I just don't know what techniques and mechanics to start learning and master. When I watch stuff like Leffen VS M2K, I'm just in so much awe, I don't understand what they're doing, or even what the commentators are saying. It's like they're playing the game in an entirely different way.

I can beat all my friends, but I wouldn't consider myself "good." I don't know how to L-Cancel, I can't Wavedash easily, and the only kind of DI I do is holding the sticks in the opposite direction of where I'm going.

So, any advice? If it helps any, my main is either Sheik or Ganondorf. I haven't decided yet, they both are extremely fun for me to play.

and then work on character specific tech. Go visit character boards and ask there, so you can learn more about character's strengths.
