Smash Wii U SmashU and updates and USB

Ill go tot he point:

My wiiu is without space for the last ryu patch... and i want to buy a USB to storage the content. My questiond are:

Can i use an USB to store the new data... how much space i need and how it works?... since all of my data till mewtwo is in the WIiU?.

2nd question: How i can play 8 player smash if one of the slots will be occupied by the USB drive?. Can i load the data and then remove the usb?}

You have to keep the USB device connected to the Wii U at all times while it's turned on.

As for using the USB device to store your new data, keep note that the USB data will have higher priority than the data that's stored on the Wii U hard drive.
