So first off, the point of this thread is to discuss the compatibility between different versions of the game and compatibility with cross region Wii-U's.
As many of you know, the 3DS has a pretty solid region lock in place, meaning American copies of 3DS games can NOT be played on European(+Australian) or Japanese consoles and vice versa. This is also in place for 3DS E-Store items as you can only access your relevant countries E-Store from a same region 3DS.

Differences between games across regions are practically non-existent with current gen consoles(Not like how oldschool PAL games would only run at 5/6ths the speed of NTSC), with the only real difference being text. With that being said, most multiplayer games don't allow cross-region multiplayer.

However, some new games are coming out with full cross-region functionality, meaning Lan or online play (Or both) are not restricted.
For example;

Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Tested: US / JP
StreetPass: YES
Local MP: YES
Online MP: YES

Fire Emblem
Tested: US / JP
StreetPass: NO
Local MP: NO

Mario Kart 7
Tested: US / JP
Download Play: NO
StreetPass: YES
Local MP: NO
Online MP: YES

*I couldn't find US/EU/AU testing sadly
*Testing Source

So, I live in Australia, meaning everything around me that is region coded is Pal/European, however myself and a few other people I know have an American 3DS. We all get American copies of games as required and there's never really an issue, except for when it comes to multiplayer. So the question is, Will an American copy of Smash be able to play multiplayer with a European/Japanese copy?
I see this affecting many players in the future that travel internationally, imagine flying over to "Insert 2014 US major here" and only being able to play with other Europeans? It would be disappointing to say the least.
"No offence to European players :p"
Now, like I'm sure a lot of other players will do, I plan on getting the Wii-U and the 3DS version of smash, so the same issue arises again. Will an American 3DS/copy of smash connect with an Australian/EU Wii-U/copy of smash?

If anyone can find any information regarding region differences, connectivity, multiplayer etc. I would love to have a read, and I will do my best to keep this thread updated as best I can.

Do whatever it takes to reduce lag, include the option to only play with people in your region if necessary. I'm sure you'll be able to play against people worldwide unless you choose not to.

Most online 3DS games that I have let you play with other regions, I'm sure this game will be no different. Especially with things like tournaments that will be going on.

3DS games will probably be fine similar to how Wii games are fine with nation-wide connectivity through online (correct me if the Wii U is different).

The only thing I'm worried about is local multiplayer for the 3DS, which means I won't be able to play local multiplayer with people in Europe if I study abroad without getting a European copy of the game >_>. I really hope that's not the case.

My god, yes. A laggy online multiplayer would be detrimental to the 3DS Smash since more people would be inclined to use the online feature.

The biggest concern for me is NTSC vs PAL, pretty much because my capture Ds is NTSC but everyone else in Australia will be playing on pal, and it won't be a whole lot of fun streaming it if I can't even vs other players in the room.
Yes, I can get a capture card on a pal ds, but it would be good to know that if I went to say Evo2014 I could vs american players.

This requires the games' content to be exactly the same. I know for a fact that the N64 version has many changes between JPN and USA versions, and people also mention differences in NTSC/PAL for Melee (e.g. Shiek d-throw). Not sure about Brawl (maybe not b/c wifi?). It'd be nice to be able to play against everyone though.

I really hope that it will be able to play different region users, but in the same room. If not, I will probably save money to move to Japan and get it there because I heard that the 3DS sold out there which means I will have plenty of people to play against. Well, hopefully they re stocked the shelves, or else I wouldn't be able to play it at all.

I've seen a few people claim Kid Icarus: Uprising lets you play local multiplayer with different regions. I can't verify it myself, but if it is true, that would be a positive sign for the local multiplayer in this game, with both games being directed by Sakurai.

It should let you play with other people around the world with wifi, with Local multiplayer for the 3DS I don't know if it would actually work or not because of the 3DS being bought from another country.

Lets just hope. It would suck though if you couldn't play others locally because of this

doesn't really matter since the only time I'd be playing locally is if me and bro wanna go at it.
