Hello! My name's James, but for years, I went by OddBoy or Odd. I'm an artist, animator, and music producer, but when I'm not doing any of those, I'm playing Smash and, it's either a hit or miss with me. I wouldn't call myself a gamer, but when it comes to smash, I'm obsessed with it. I've played smash since N64 and my experiences with it have been...different. I hope you like life stories because I got one for you!
It all started at a Barber Shop [SSB64]
When I was 6 I went to get my monthly haircut when I saw 2 kids playing Super Smash Brothers 64. At the time, I was still very new to video games. I only had Mario Kart 64 and Wario Land 4 for GBA so I was pretty familiar with the Mario, so seeing Mario and Donkey Kong fighting Elf Guy and Power Ranger sparked my interest. My first ever match was Captain falcon mirror match and I schooled him….wait...I was green one? Nevermind, I killed myself 3 times, But after that game and a painful haircut, I turned to my mom and said. “I want this game…” That day we went to Toys R Us and got a fresh copy. It’s been my favorite game ever since.
What’s a Melee? [SSBM]
Now I wasn’t fortunate enough to have a Game Cube, so I missed out on the Melee train. Heck, I didn’t even know Melee was a thing until Brawl was announced back in 2006. During this time I started getting into Youtube, looking up Sonic Parodies and Smash videos, but every smash video I found wasn’t a Smash 64. It was always some weird enhanced version of 64, except it wasn’t 64. It was Melee. All in all, I don’t really play a lot of Melee now because I just get wrecked 90% of the time. I did play Super Smash Flash 1 and it. was. terrible, But I didn’t care because I could be Knuckles.
Bought Brawl With No Wii. [SSBB]
Like the GameCube, I never actually owned a Wii, but I played a lot of Brawl. I had cousins whom I visited a lot, and they had a Brawl. This is when I started to take smash seriously. I started to actually think about what I was doing and finding strategies and combos so I could consistently beat my subpar cousins. I could only go so far though with only 3 people to play with in my life. I was still a kid and I didn’t have any friends who were as interested in Smash as I was.
Will This Break my WiiU? [ProjectM]
Fast forward and I got myself a WiiU for the sole purpose of getting Smash 4 and nothing else. In the meantime I needed my own copy of smash to play, so I finally got my own copy of Brawl. Just a few days later I see a video about Project M. For a while I was afraid to tweak my brand new console, but I eventually manned up and downloaded it….nothing much to say about that. It’s pretty cool. >_>
Dethrone Peach! [SSB4]
Planet Comicon 2014 in Kansas City. Not only was it my first convention but it was also my first Smash experience outside my house. I spent the whole time there making friends whom I’ve never spoken to again after that. I spent most of my time playing Friendly 4 player matches in a king of the hill kind of rotation; winner keeps playing until they lose. Well that night was probably the most memorable night because I kept winning so many matches, people started chanting “Dethrone Peach!” For a moment, I thought I was good. I was the best…
Then I signed up for the tournament and lost the first round. The End
And that’s my unnecessary backstory. After that convention, I’ve been more into smash than ever. I want to get better and maybe even stand a chance in the competitive scene. It would be nice to find smash scenes in my area [Midwest], make friends and such. I mainly play Smash U, but I do have Project M and Melee. I’m a Peach main with Falco, Ganon, and Wario as my back ups. I hope to meet other players and just have a good time.
