Does anyone here think people take smash too seriously? Drama, Physical Anger, throwing controllers, excessive trash talk. Not to ention that alot of competetive players end up injuring themselves by trying to play at high levels. It stops being about fun and starts being about an elitist. It just seems rediculous to get this serious about a video game.

You're a clam during tournaments? :troll:

Really though, it is kinda silly to get super angry about Smash (even though I'm sometimes guilty of this).

This is the case for many games. Sure it's just a game but playing it competitively allows people to have a much deeper understanding towards the game. Competition becomes fun because it rewards you for practicing and putting your skills to the test. Everyone responds differently to losses. It has less to do with elitism and more to do about putting in work towards winning. Some are more cocky than others. Some get really upset when losing. The game becomes a competition. It is natural to become salty for losing.

My point is that competitive smash is just another hobby. Comparing it to any competitive activity yields no difference. Competition is fun for people, so people take it seriously.

No one is forcing anyone to like it or accept it. It's understandable that a game meant for simple fun being played for money may look ridiculous. Besides there are much more ridiculous activities that have become competitive.

No, I don't think so.
The simple fact is that some people get more enjoyment out of their games by taking their focus on them to this level.

Take myself. I don't study frame data or even combos, but I don't like items or stages with lots of hazards. When I play, I play seriously and focus hard on the match.
It's not because I'm elitist, it's because that's what takes me deeper into the game and enhances my personal enjoyment.

Well, to be honest.. I don't really take it seriously. It's just a game, after all. I get mad over losing at times, but that's about it.

It's just the competitve nature. Some people use there own money and book flights and hotels in other states and sometimes countries to play the game they love and try to make money. I suppose when they see their chances of the prize becoming hard to reach, emotions run high.

I have a bad habit of getting mad when losing a lot, I'm trying to change my habit too.

It's only natural to get a little frustrated when you lose. It doesn't matter what game, sport or other activity that you are engaging in.

There are always going to be people who take things to the extreme but that shouldn't be used to label all people who play competitively.

Once upon a time in the lovely world of YouTube, there are these people at a local tourney, and when P2 got last place, he was so mad, he destroyed the TV with his chair. I learned a valuable lesson that day on how seriously some people take losses. (Don't ask me for link. I lost it, yet I look it up again, and can't find it. It may be taken down)

It's actually kind of disturbing how angry people get after losing just once. No offense to anyone, but sometimes it actually makes me worried that TV's and systems are being destroyed simply because a player can't beat an opponent. With all due respect to all players... these are... grown adults... throwing remotes and trash talking other people... because his or her character got KO'd. People are going to argue that Smash is an activity like any other, but seriously, it's a video game. It could be classified as a sport, but there is virtually nothing physical about it unless the player makes it physical.

Before making accusations, I am not bashing on any competitive players whatsoever. A lot of players are humble and very accepting/mature when they lose a match. However, some people take it to the extreme. I understand it's his or her passion to play Smash, and they have all the right to persue that passion... but it's kind of crazy to see just how seriously it can be taken. We should all just learn from our mistakes, just like we should with any other activity.

Anything that can be competitive can and will be taken seriously by many. It could even be competitive connect four. That's just human nature honestly. No one likes to lose especially when there's money and **** on the line.

I do take things a tad too seriously at times...

...just be grateful you haven't seen my youger self. Man, was I a sore loser when I lost to my sister...these days, whenever I do multiplayer, I try to focus on just having fun without too much concern over whether or not I win or lose.

Of course, I haven't played Smash competitively, and as others said, when money is on the line, emotions do rise...

A lot of people take their games too seriously but that's what makes it funny.

I only take it way too seriously on For Glory, because I can't tell if people leave because they are bored, think they are just better or just had to leave, so I just assume the worst.

If anything I mostly would get angry at myself, it tends not to show though I think if I'm just having a bad day then I'll most likely **** talk but I usually play alone at home on For Glory, been waiting to get out of school for sure so I can go to a tourney, and I'll probably just spectate since where I'm at the Melee scene is huge.
