I, like presumably many others, would hope for a Smash Run mode to return to Ultimate as a part of a free update. I think it would be amazing if this mode got updated with online support, or even some new features that allowed it to be a new take on the original game mechanic of Smash.

If home run can return, then why not Smash Run?

If so, how would you want a new Smash Run to look?

The thing is, they specifically said they weren't able to also sink development resources to creating unique Adventure Mode enemies in the base game, and Smash Run as a whole, being the 3DS signature mode, might have generally been a huge sink of resources to make, even with some of that work already coming from Kid Icarus: Uprising anyway.

Like I don't know how it'd look if such a big part of the base game was specifically designed to avoid creating things like that, but then they turned around and did it for DLC anyway.

There are the decent amount of Assist Trophies that were made KO-able for points this time around, but:

-Could you get a bunch of those running around on screen simultaneously when we can't get say, the model of Morgana present during Joker's taunts/five+ Pokemon Trainers/2 Assist Trophies/Ditto PokeBall in 8 Player? (although stuff like that might be more for clarity considering there are eight players running around, but maybe this might not be the only issue in performance here when 3DS Smash Run couldn't do proper multiplayer on the map with it?)
-They are KO-able, but does that mean they have a way of attacking them and their patterns that's similar to those enemies? Or would it be a cluster**** of them ganging up on you by multiplying the annoyance of an Assist Trophy by five?
-That's still resources needed for the stage and power-ups and features and what not, though at that point it might be at Home Run Contest levels, admittedly.

They seem to have a hard enough time just making a damn Boss mode for Bosses already present in the game, and already present in the final part of World of Light as essentially a Boss mode! (though, again, that didn't stop Home Run Contest)

But ultimately, if an "Assist Trophy version of Smash Run" would be conventional, or anything with attacking them in succession as a neat little mode like Mob Smash or something, maybe even for powering up before bigger battles like Smash Run was), that's the campaigning we need to collectively show towards Nintendo and Sakurai right now so they can hear us before support for Ultimate finishes in a year or two.
