Hello fellow smashers. I was wondering which version of smash bros you find to have better competition and you find over all a better experience. I am speaking strictly online play of course.

I'd recommend the Wii U version for online play and to have better competition. Although the 3DS may still have people around in online, the number of players is much bigger and you'll find more matches in the Wii U version.

Wii U definitely. It has way more controller options (i.e. more than one) better online and, in truth, is the true version of the game. The 3DS version is basically Smash Bros. Lite.

I know you said strictly online play but I've never gotten used to the controls on the 3DS. The gamecube controller on wii u is just...butter.

Wii U. Control options and 8 player mode with better online.

3DS: I'd say Smash Run is better than Smash Tour. But Wii U still has Event Matches and Special Orders. 3DS has 3D visuals, but not everyone is a fan of those, and there are some points where the 3D is really pretty (often at win screens at the end of matches) but other times when it's just a hassle (often during gameplay).

I'd weigh in for Wii U, but if you travel a lot, or know friends with it on 3DS, it's not bad to have on 3DS either. If you have both systems, smash brothers portable and smash brothers full are both fun. And gets you a free Mewtwo.

Just get both. Wii U is yeah, typical Smash stuff in home console. 3DS is Smash in a handheld, one where you can use it to practice or even play if you don't feel like playing on the Wii U.
Wii U has the same online as 3DS (since when is it better?) so both versions' online will lag, sometimes lagless, sometimes both.

I have the 3DS version, and don't think I will be getting the Wii U version anytime soon. If you already have a Wii U, what are you waiting for!??!! GO GET THE GAME! If not, try to save up for one. Smash games aren't like Pokemon games and come out every few months. It will probably be a few years before the next one comes out, so getting a Wii U and some games (including smash) will be worth it.

Without a doubt, Wii U.
3DS right now seems more like the prototype version of Wii U except for the fact that only 3DS has Smash Run.

Online play depends on the connection, not because the home console is stronger than the handheld. So agreed.

I'd say both are great. It's ultimately up to you, really.

Well, with Wii U you have the option of a wired connection at least.

Also just get Wii U, unless you really want to play on 3DS/play Smash Run there's really no reason to get it. Even with one being portable, it's just not worth playing when you have a superior alternative.

I seriously doubt something like the Wii Lan Adapter is common these days....is it?
Not everyone has the money to buy that thing or an alternative. Unless that thing is cheap, then of course.

I wish they had not done a 3DS version, I feel like we got shorted on items, characters, game modes on the Wii U version because of it. That is just my opinion.

They planned the characters before development (Even Greninja who we didn't even know was in X and Y at the time) and we got all of them except IC, and it can still be possible to add them in even with some difficulties but decided they weren't high In priority. I'm assuming Items were also planned before development.

I don't know on what you mean by shorten game modes on Wii U since there are a lot more modes the Wii U has to offer than any smash game.

Not really. All of the game modes (Tickets, Classic, even SmashTour) are basically just normal Smash matches with different settings added to them. Other Smash games had you running through levels/mazes, break the targets, and even full Adventure Modes. I prefer the old-style Classic Mode but I wish they could have done something with actual levels or uniqueness. Nearly all the modes in Smash 4 can just be done in a normal smash match with changed settings.

Ok even so, how does the 3ds effect the Wii U game modes? I mean, they probably had a reason to get rid of target smash which is totally possible. The 3ds actually has those kinds of levels and mazes in smash run (including the final match such as run and climb) And I believe the Wii U lacks any of maze/levels unless you count Master Fortress. So I believe that there was a decision about having any kinds of levels like those for Wii U (Which also explains why some enemies are the same as on smash run except with a black tone). As for adventure, it's not the 3ds fault (heck the only real goal for the 2 versions was just characters while everything else can be different), but was because of spoilers.

I honestly don't see how the 3ds really limits anything for the Wii U at all. It is probably just how they decided how the Wii U version will go out because none of the modes on the 3ds are exact same. Even all star has a difference (order is backwards compared to the 3ds).

3DS effects Wii U in that time had to be devoted to 3DS version instead of making a solid Wii U version that could have had more modes, characters, etc.

They would have gotten rid of the Wii U version before the 3DS version. Be glad there is a Wii U version to begin with, thank based Iwata for that.

If the 3DS version wasn't there, chances are we wouldn't be playing a Smash 4 right now.

If they did that then they would be sunk as a company. Smash is holding up Nintendo right now. Part of the reason Wii U was such a failure out of the game was a lack of Smash/Mario Kart/Zelda title.

The Wii U was such a failure because of a lack of good launch titles, and then the general disappointment became the norm. It's heavily underrated. Plus, the 3DS was netting tens of millions of sales. And right now it has a almost 11* te sales of the Wii U. If they made only 3DS, they wouldn't have sunk as a company, because they would have made the game better, like possibly far ore characters would be in. Better characters, better balancing... No actually, more time to make a game isn't that much better. Take Brawl for example. More time can be used to ruin a game.

I don't think timing has any real effect to it though. The amount of characters are already high and it has an average amount of "extra spaces". What I mean by that is how the roster expands in each game and I believe they wouldn't go any further than that originally. We can always get more characters by updates anyway *cough* Mewtwo *cough*.

Honestly I think the modes are truly fine as they are but I will admit that more modes wouldn't make things much better and would make everything more of a cluster.

I also have to mention that more time doesn't mean that much anyway especially to today's standards thanks to updates. Another thing is that I think of Melee. The game only had about 2 years of development and look at it now. Granted it may not be exactly what Sakurai imagine what it would be today but the game itself is great to many people who ever played smash.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that they probably wouldn't go much further if the 3ds never existed and if they were to add more modes, can be such a thing as too much and more time to focus on the Wii U version can be pointless in the end especially if we can get updates.

Although I have to say that if a 3ds version didn't exist, Wii U could of be in the same situation since the 3ds was actually planned first.

I admit, I do love Smash Wii U. It might be the best Smash yet. (I cut my teeth on Melee so I have been through the three intimately and I own all four thanks to inheriting a 64 and Smash 1 from my wife).

I experience lag on both Wii U and 3DS. Personally, for whatever reason I find the 3DS version more fun and I quite enjoy the control scheme. I pre-ordered the "New" 3DS XL so I'm excited to mess around with the C-Stick. I want to see the 3DS version in tournaments more often but the Wii U is obviously preferred by a majority of players.

I also have the Wii U version but the Gamepad while usable isn't as comfortable for me. I don't have a Pro Controller nor have I ever played Smash with a Gamecube controller. Controls aren't everything though, as previously stated I have acclimated myself to 3DS controls and can't play any other way. I even use the 3DS as a controller on Wii U when playing with my family.

The 3DS version was hype when it came out and I still enjoy the fact that I can play Smash whenever and wherever I want with it, but it really does feel like, as some say, a $40 demo for the Wii U iteration. The controls or lack thereof are the biggest drawback. Online play can be equally smooth or laggy in either version.

Smash Run is def better than Tour though. Way better.

I have a question..

Is gameplay the same in both versions? I only have 3ds, but my friends make tournaments in the wiiu version.

If I practice in the 3ds version, I'll be fine?

People die ridiculously later because the blastlines are almost as big as the stage, but that's the only relevant difference.

Swimming is removed from the 3ds but you can still swim in the Wii U version. Do what you want with that information.

Other than that the gameplay is pretty much identical.

Wii U. Larger screen, more processing power, better controller availability. Not saying the 3DS is bad, but it's hard to follow everything.

Granted, I wish some stages on the 3DS were available on the Wii U as well...

Overall wiiu is better for everything. I played the 3DS version religiously for months and the wiiu version just completly outshines it.
