I'm unsure as to the details of this tech. I read the guide on DI and from my understanding it is when you input c stick as you get hit from an attack that lags when it connects like Falcon's knee or Zelda's thunderkick and it moves you for a second before you are sent flying. Is it a necessary technique that everyone should know? Is it really that useful? How do you find the time to input on such short notice?

Yes it is very hard to implement in a split second but the rewards are there.
It is much easier to do during a multi-hitting attack like PK-Fire or a repeating jab in which case you can Smash DI out of the next hitbox. It has much less reward for single KO type attacks aside from the very slight movement from the blast-zones.
A very notable use of Smash DI would be when you are very close to the ground/edge while you are being hit and can Smash DI into the edge so you can tech and cancel the momentum and survive where you otherwise would not.

Smash DI is input on the control stick, not the c-stick.
Automatic Smash DI (ASDI) can be input using the c-stick but doesn't have to be.
But yes it is most important for escaping multi-hit moves or weakly hitting moves like jab, and is also good for making yourself collide with walls to enable a tech or for incrementally improving your survivability on strong hits.

I'm pretty sure Smash DI is on c stick while ASDI is on control stick, however c stick out prioritized control stick.
