I kind of got the idea from Super Mario Strikers.

Basically, if you're charging a smash attack,
you can press L, R or Z or something and the charge and smash attack will cancel.

It could be used for mindgame purposes.. <_<
I just thought it would be a decent addition.

That would be pretty crazy but I think it would be really useful.

no! it's funny seeing people charge up a smash for a really long time and realizing it's not going to hit and then just standing there waiting to be grabbed afterwards

Eh, I like the fact that you have to commit to charging a smash attack. I wouldn't be terribly disappointed if it was in, though, just a different way of playing.

if charged smash attacks stay the same in brawl as they were in Melee I'd rather like this edition. but if they were made more powerful (which they should considering you're just standing there) then it shouldn't.

lol just what we need, another move to save us from getting hit.

Nah, actually, I'm for this idea, it would be neat and useful.

This trick would be absolutely sick. If it were in the game, of course I would use it! However, it would make smash attacks relatively safe all the freakin' time. If the opponent comes at you from a safe angle, you just cancel the smash and attack the opponent's direction instead (or dodge). There has to be a small penalty for using smash attacks. That is what makes Melee so intense: to be good, you have to be good at punishing the opponent's misses!

No smash-cancels, to freaking easy to use, unless you can only use it a couple of frames and in the middle of the charge-up....Naaaah just give me air-smashes, makes the game easy, too, but it looks much cooler :p

Exactly. Then there would be special cancels and so on. Smash attacks are supposed to have lag.

it would be a very subtle addition. most people just use the c-stick to smash. charging up is pretty rare. however, i could see it being used a bit on the ledge. say your opponent is coming back after being hit out. you could charge and if they seem to be out of range, just cancel and do something else

While we're at it, let's just completely abolish lag on attacks, normally associated with and considered penalty for missing a high-risk, high-return attack like a Smash Attack, from Smash Brothers all together. /sarcasm

It's an awesome idea, but I think it'd be too easy.

Think of it this way, your opponent is charging an Fsmash waiting for you to get back on the stage. You roll behind him and punish him with a falcon punch =P .

I'd like this more than smash cancels considering I hardly ever get caught doing one out of place.

Yup. And it seems they're trying to make more and more things about super smash automatic in brawl, such as links tether, automatic crouch cancelling during Ike's up b and other unrevealed moves that were hinted at, neutral jab combos, and to a lesser extent, the mother badge. and I quote

this item gives you reflector capabilities—and you don’t even have to do anything
Problem with making things automatic instead of requiring timing? Simple. You cant miss something that happens automatically.

Mark my words brawl will phail to be as good as competitive fighter as melee is/was. Even if its the greatest game of the year, it's being watered down and you all know it. And don't give me footstooling this and gliding that. Those techniques are both ********, and crawling just doesnt make any sense at all, you can swat projectiles so you dont need to crawl under them, and you can CC out of any dash to do a smash, or any tilt.

Brawl pisses me off.

Not necessarily, Dylan. Yes, the automation means no missing, but that simply shifts the focus to other areas. There is always a way to be better than someone else at a game (especially smash games).

Yeah, but will it be as fast paced as melee? Will it require the reflexes, intellectual genius, and mindgames it took to win in melee?

hell no it won't. You can't make a better tournament fighter than smash melee, come on now. Especially in a game where you can collect stickers, sorry.

Not saying brawl wont be competitive, every smash game is competitive because every gay nub thinks that hes the best because he can beat his friends, despite never having gone to an MLG, or other large tourney with top level players. I live in canada and dont go to MLG because im poor, shut up we have some pro's here too :( (I might go to at melees end if I save up the money for the plane)

But yeah, melee just worked on every level. Brawl just wont be the same.

As far as I know, L-canceling will not be automated. That alone separates good players from scrubby ones. And let us not forget teching. ^_^

But who actually uses items anyways? Yeah, the reflector is automatic, but let's be serious. How many items could easily be taken advantage of in Melee? Do you have any other solid proof of watered downness or is the rest just speculation? It is impossible to please everyone, I suppose. That's why, no matter how much I love Melee, I'm just gonna take an optimistic approach and have fun with Brawl. That's what it's for, is to have fun.

Dylan is extra hard to please. Supposedly Melee was a fluke, and nothing will ever measure up to it again.

Smash cancelling isn't happening since Sakurai would've said so in his update of when he was showing attacks and how to do smash attacks. And Dylan, Melee isn't the best fighting game and you're overreacting about Brawl. You're bashing a game that hasn't ever come out yet with limited knowledge as to what the game may be. We'll have to dig deeper to see if Sakurai left the depth in there as he did in Melee, which I believe he did.

In your head.
I would have to disagree with your "smash-canceling." Smash-canceling means to you canceling a charged smash attack right? Well first of all...what are smash attacks? Smash attacks are an attempt to Knock Out your opponent right? Basic Smash history. That, of course comes with a price. One word: Lag. If you had the ability to cancel a charged smash attack...that would be way too imbalanced. You chose to do that charged Smash attack - now you either land it or not. Smash attacks(whether charged or non-charged): they are powerful, but they are slow. That's how its always been (and hope it will stay that way).

If it were implemented...man will everything change. Smash-canceling, now what? Taunt-canceling? Lol well taunt-canceling would be good actually! Lol at a taunting Young Link at 150% in the middle of Final Destination. Anyways, sorry but I have to disagree with "Smash-canceling."

100 bucks says you're still gonna buy it.

I can see what you're saying but at least play the game first.
