Smash Brothers Report: Developers considering downloadable content

Relevant passage: "It’s worth noting that the Smash Bros. franchise may not see additional characters, but I think the door can’t quite be shut yet. For Super Smash Bros. Melee, the developers included trophies in the game that could only be accessed by playing other games that came out later – such as Pikmin and Animal Crossing. I like to think that Nintendo could do something similar with the newest entry, but actually add full characters instead of just pre-made trophies. When the new Zelda comes out, perhaps a character from the game could be added as DLC if users pre-order the game or perhaps Waluigi could be available to those who purchase a new Mario Tennis or Wario game."

Please no DLC, Sakurai.

PWREASE!

I think he even said it himself that him and his team are trying their hardest at getting everything onto the disc.

Perhaps in the future, after new franchises for Nintendo release with their own Smash-potential icon. or fan favorites that didn't quite make the cut.

It is almost guaranteed that SSB5 won't be coming soon.

That's only good news for New/popular IPs.
Would be cool if they did it, but I'm kind of not amused at what characters would become available through that.
So it's all the same to me.

Would prefer paid DLC, at least that could cover a wider range of characters, AND it won't cost you the price of a brand new retail game, which if first party, they tend to not drop the price until the console is at its end.

That's not an actual quote from Sakurai, just someone's speculation.

I made a topic about DLC. My two cents is that there will be free DLC at some point for limited time, and after a month it will be paid. And then there will be a secondary DLC thats pay only. First one will be some additions weren't done in time for launch (2 characters and 3 stages). the secondary pay one will be an expansion on stage builder. Well at least those are what I think the two DLCs may be. The pay option could be switched on them

I would love if they released new colors or totally new costumes for the characters as DLC. Metroid Fusion Samus? Raccoon Mario? Mr. L Luigi? Sign me up!

There's obviously going to be DLC.
Nothing is obvious. But I would hope so. That said I don't think he'll consider it for a good while after release. Think about it; you just finished a game you spent over 2 years on. Do you really want to start thinking about it again for a while? But that is likely a good thing. Releasing DLC a couple years after release could really extend the longevity of the game.

DLC is added after the game is finished. After the game is complete there is nothing wrong extra content.

I know many of us (myself included) are referring to the upcoming smash games as SSB4. But we should really refer to the theoretical next one (which may or may not come into existence) as SSB6. This is because Sakurai refers to the wiiU and 3ds versions as 4 and 5. So while calling both of those 4 I don't think creates much confusion, calling the one he will be calling 6, 5 will just be confusing.

Lol, you're kind of right... but for now (at this current state in time) it's just going to be SSB4. SSBWU or SSB3DS

I can´t see many people picking up Sakurai's wishful thinking of considering Wii U and 3DS SSBs as 4 and 5. Not when the mechanics are supposed to be identical, and the characters the exact same. Both probably having the exact same main theme, etc.

If anything, it'll be seen as SSB4 version A, and version B.

I think DLC is seriously our best hope for SSB4 making the most of its potential. It seems like Sakurai is going to keep the initial roster the same size as Brawl's, meaning cuts are to be expected. DLC could very well be the solution for cut veterans, as well as other possibly questionable newcomers in existing series. Characters that add to the cast positively without feeling essential to being there in the first place, or characters that do deserve a spot in Smash Bros. but had to sit out on part of having their spot taken by a more opportune character. Possible choices like these:

If K. Rool gets in over Dixie, then Dixie could be DLC. She's not required to make the Donkey Kong series feel complete, but she nonetheless appeals to an audience that would otherwise want to play as her. Likewise, characters like Krystal or Porky have all the fighting potential that's needed, but might not be included on part of how smaller series like Star Fox and Earthbound may feel bloated in representation if they were included in the initial roster. DLC acts as a method of getting around that, allowing those that want to play as those characters to buy them without making anyone else feel as if they're over-representing any one series in the main roster. Additionally, Lucario and Ike, characters likely to be replaced by the fresher faces of their series, could still be in Smash Bros. without feeling like their presence is only appealing to past players rather than contributing to their series.

It's a win-win.

I really hope Sakurai considers DLC for that reason, if not at the very least to readd cut veterans.

I completely agree with all of this - my point in the article was precisely that DLC must happen for this reason. Can we expect to see some obscure characters on the rosters initially? Probably not - but would it be awesome? Absolutely it would be. Smash Bros. is one of the only games I can really see myself shelling out serious money for on DLC.

I think DLC would be great for a game of this caliber. Not only would we be getting additional content to enhance the life-span of the game. We would be insuring that some characters aren't permanently cut. I always wondered what it would be like if Dr. Mario or Mewtwo made it into Brawl. They were two of my favorite characters that were cut. The forbidden seven would make it to Brawl eventually if we got DLC. So I really hope SSB4 gets some great DLC. I mean if people don't want additional content that is their prerogative. :p

“It isn’t a matter of ‘if the next game has 50 characters, that’ll be enough.’ There is a certain charm to games that have huge casts of playable characters, but they tend to have issues with game balance and it becomes very difficult to fine-tune each character and have them all feel distinctive…. In terms of quantity, we’ve probably already reached the limit of what’s feasible. I think a change of direction may be what’s needed.”

Basically means that he thinks a roster larger than Brawl's seems excessive. Hopefully he will think otherwise when the game has been out for a while and he sees DLC as an opportunity.

Speaking of DLC. I apologize. I am very ignorant when it comes to handheld consoles. I haven't owned one since the gameboy SP. I actually borrowed a DS to play through the Pokemon Gold remake. My point is that I am clueless.

Can you load DLC onto a 3DS game? I mean if it connects to the internet surely you are able to. I just want to make sure. I guess this question is for anyone.

Yes, the Nintendo 3DS has a huge eShop that accepts real money to virtually download games. The latest Fire Emblem makes use of DLC in a very straightforward manner.

that's way before namco got involved
I don't see how that changes Sakurai's vision. Namco guys are helping to balance the characters and stages, Sakurai still directs and decides almost every aspect of the games.
