This is.......alarming. We all know how popular this franchise is, we know how popular the Switch is, but to be a best seller by a significant portion with a almost 3 Months before the game even drops is truly telling of exactly what this means. We're going to see such an influx of people who are picking up Smash for the first time with the desire to be competitive. Scrubs, if you want to use the term. And they'll be looking for validation and a sense of community.
This is not a thread about how we should be more open to the newcomers though. This is a thread about how we AFFECT them and they in turn affect the scene. The newcomers will be here no matter what, lurking in threads, palling around on Reddit, being Stream Monsters in Twitch streams, and reading tweets. The more fame we get in the scene, be it individual contenders, websites, rule movements or such, the more many of these newcomers will defer to us and mimic our opinions for the previously mentioned sense of community. If a highly notorious contender/streamer comes out and says 'Delfino's ceiling is too low' these guys will take the ball and run with it.
BE AWARE OF THIS!
Actions have consequences, and even if you're just expressing your opinion and no one should take it seriously, expressing that opinion IS an action and WILL have consequences. We can't post attention grabbing videos on Youtube that say 'SHOULD STAGEMORPHING BE BANNED!?', say it's just your opinion, and not expect the many many people who watch that video to suddenly mirror this opinion and share it irresponsibly. This can have long lasting negative consequences with in the community. Furthermore, many community members at all stages use us as bars. 'Well, I always hated Bayonetta, but now that I know xXxfAkE_nAmExXx who I follow on Twitch thinks she should be banned, I am right to think she should be banned as well' is a common reaction by the common newcomer. And ALL of these newcomer and their opinions will find their way into Twitch and onto Reddit where they can spread even further.
Mob Mentality is an ugly thing. Please keep that in mind when all these unbiased newcomers start arriving.
