Smash Rookie
I was just thinking about smash and came up with all of this. None of this is perfect or even refined I was just putting all my thoughts down on paper, and I want to see what others think if anyone cares.
I think Mario’s current move set is a little outdated considering he’s had the same move set since brawl, but the problem is by now if we updated him it would change his character entirely in smash. Another problem is because he has such a large amount of titles to pull from for a move set it would be hard to make Mario feel like a good representation of his whole series in only one move set.
What I think should happen is we should add two new Mario characters to the roster and ditch the current one, as the current one is Mario up to Mario 64 plus a few touches to acknowledge Sunshine, Super Mario World and Odyssey a little bit. First off let’s keep Dr Mario just as a replacement of the old type of Mario play style, kinda like what Young Link did to past Links in Ultimate. The two new Mario’s would be one to represent all of his 2D adventures and one for his 3D series games. What to call them I don’t know, but I think this is the best way to represent the character. The default skin on the 2D Mario could be the builders outfit since that game is a celebration of the 2D Mario Games. Other skins for 2D could be power up costumes(unless used in the move set like King K Rool’s Neutral B), Jump Man, Gameboy(like Dedede and Kirby). 2D would mainly draw inspiration from games like Super Mario Bros 1-3, Super Mario World, Super Mario Land1-2, Paper Mario kinda, New Super Mario Bros 1-U, Super Mario Maker1-2, and retro Mario games like Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. 3D would mainly draw inspiration from Mario 64, SunShine, Galaxy 1-2, Odyssey, 3D Land and World, and perhaps the spin-off titles such as sport games and Mario Party, Paper Mario kinda. Possible skins for 3D could be again power ups unless used in move set, Various Odyssey outfits, spin off outfits. Might be confusing to have his hat have the 64 wings, a luma and Cappy whether in skins or not.
2D: Down air: ground pound
N-B: Fireball
S-B: Cape
U-B: Super Jump Punch
D-B: Power Up? Could change his move set: Tanoki Leaf(change S-B, U-B?, Down air). Acorn(U-B, wall jump). Propeller(U-B, Down air). Ice Flower(N-B). PenguinSuit( dash attack?, swim).
Final Smash: Same, mega mushroom, super star, U Gamepad blocks, Donkey Kong Hammer, jet fighter from Super Mario Land.
3D: U-B: 64 Wings
S-B: F.L.U.U.D.
D-B: Galaxy Stretch Plant/Luma spin(Mario can stop his own with any attack at any time).
N-B: Cappy: Press a direction immediately after thrown for a directional throw or spin. Hits(low damage). Can be used as a bounce pad for both Mario and opponents. Hold to keep out. Double tap to capture. Capturing will give the opponent a temporary Mario hat and mustache, they will also have the same% as Mario maybe the other way around. Any healing or stat changes the captured opponent receives will apply to Mario as well. Any thing summoned like an assist trophy or Pokémon ball belongs to Mario, besides move set summons. Once the capture wears off damage taken previously will return. Mario cannot use Cappy at all until the capture wears off and he won’t have a hat. Upon return Cappy will bring items for Mario.
Dash Attack: Same.
Final Smash: T-Rex. So long a bowser! Tank capture.
Donkey Kong final Smash: Retro barrels falling
What I want from Stages
In Injustice on most but not all stages you could knock someone through a wall and change the scenery of where you were fighting. While selecting your stage you could pick which part the stage you started out in. I think it would be cool if we had something similar in smash, for example skyloft has multiple areas and transportation stages. If the stage stayed at that part the whole match I wouldn’t mind but I also wouldn’t mind if transitions still happened because I would hope Hazards Off would make the stage not change. Omega and Battlefield forms would have this feature too because some have varying backgrounds or themes.
I wish there was another level of legality for stages, like a boarder legal stage, maybe you could pick it if you are really far behind so we could see some stages like reset Bomb Forest or Dracula’s Castle. But I can’t think of when we could do that because we usually do best of 3s.
I’m going to go over each stage and what I wish Hazards Off did to each stage. In addition to what it already does unless I want to change something Hazards off does.
Battlefield: No changes
Big Battlefield: I think it should be legal in doubles but I understand that it is cluttered.
FD: No changes
Peach’s Castle: The corner slants on each side should go, they are placed where they prevent a lot of kills.
Kongo Jungle: I know some people would prefer the platforms to move up and down like usual and some don’t want to be able to recover through the stage. I’m good either way.
Hyrule Castle: It’s Fine
Yoshi’s Island 64: Get rid of the clouds shrink the blast zones, I don’t mind the top platform but it can go if it needs to.
Dreamland: No Changes
Saffron City: It’s fine
Mushroom Kingdom: It’s fine
Princess Peach’s Castle: It’s not fit for competitive play.
Rainbow Cruise: You could maybe adjust the blast zones, remove the top platform and shorten the right wall.
Kongo Falls: Get rid of the rock.
Jungle Japes: You could make the water a visual, but even I don’t want it for competitive play.
Great Bay: It’s fine
Temple: It’s Fine
Brinstar: Make it so you can’t recover through the stage.
Yoshi’s Island (Melee): It’s fine
Yoshi’s Story: At the very least stop the shy guys from dropping food if we have all items off. My most preferred version of this stage would have no shy guys, but it would still have Randall, you could maybe make him a little smaller too, if people prefer the Melee version of Randall.
Fountain of Dreams: It would be great if we could play this stage without frame drops, but I’ll settle if I have to for the platforms not to move. Have Hazards off get rid of the frame drops and the reflection too if it’s causing frame drops or disrupting competitive play.
Green Greens: You could make the top blast zone bigger. Most still won’t find it fit for competitive play, but that would be better.
Corneria: Having the ship blast from its lower cannons would actually be better for preventing camping down there but it’s still not fit for competitive play.
Venom: Not fit for competitive play.
Pokémon Stadium: No changes.
Onett: It’s Fine.
Mushroom Kingdom 2: It’s Fine.
Brinstar Depths: It would be perfect if it was just the top part of the stage and a smaller version of the floating rock on the left. If that’s too much just getting rid of all the other floating rocks on the other sides would be better but still have problems. Tilting the left one would also be better.
Big Blue: Adjust the blast zones and have it just be the ship with no road. Then I personally think it would be fine. But it’s cool to have the current version of the stage with Hazards Off.
Fourside: It’s Fine.
Delfino Plaza: Just have it stay still. This would also benefit greatly from the starting stage feature.
Mushroomy Kingdom: It’s fine.
Figure-8 Circuit: It’s fine.
WarioWare, Inc.: Expand the side blast zones a bit.
Bridge of Eldin: it’s fine but the Smash 4 Omega Version, I want that to return.
Nofiar: It’s fine.
Frigate Orpheon: No changes. This would also benefit from the starting stage feature.
Yoshi’s Island (Brawl): No changes.
Halberd: Adjust the blast zones.
Lylat Cruise: Fix it, I heard it’s janky and glitchy. (Never mind it’s fixed)
Pokémon Stadium 2: No changes
Port Town Aero Drive: Making just the Transition Stage would make it legal probably, there might need to be some adjustments to the blast zones. But I kinda like having a version of that stage just without cars.
Castle Siege: Get rid of the visibility problem.
Distant Planet: It’s Fine
Smashville: no changes.
New Pork City: It’s fine
Summit: It’s fine but some might prefer to have it be still, remove ice slick and break ice.
Skyworld: Not fit for competitive play.
Shadow Moses Island: It’s fine.
Luigi’s Mansion: It’s fine.
Pirate Ship: I would want the water to just be visual and I wouldn’t mind an adjustment of the blast zones. Most would still not see it as fit for competitive play, it would be better without the top platform though.
Spear Pillar: Removing the bottom half would make it totally fine but almost identical to another stage so I prefer the diversity.
75 m: Make it 25 m instead, I don’t even care if it has barrels.
Mario Bros: Maybe get rid of the screen jumping?
Hanenbow: It’s not fit for competitive play.
Green Hill Zone: It’s fine
3D Land: one of the transitions of the stage might be better.
Golden Plains: one of the transitions of the stage might be better.
Paper Mario: Removing the walk off would make it better, possibly border legal.
Gerudo Valley: It’s fine
Spirit Train: It’s fine
Dreamland GB: It’s fine
Unova Pokémon League: No changes.
Prism Tower: Would benefit from the starting stage feature.
Mute City SNES: it’s fine.
Magicant: Remove bottom platform and some would prefer to have some of the platforms adjusted and maybe the blast zones too.
Arena Fox: Would benefit greatly from the starting stage feature.
Reset Bomb Forest: I wouldn’t mind having the hole filled, and the top one or two platforms removed.
Tortimer Island: it’s fine, the water could be made to just be a background.
Balloon Fight: it’s fine, you could turn off the blast zone crossing.
Living Room: It’d be more consistent to just have it be flat, most wouldn’t prefer that. Just have the blocks start in position.
Find Mii: To make it closer to being legal you could get rid of the cage or be able to break it off.
Tomodachi Life: It’s fine, maybe make hazards off always have the walls gone just for the option.
PictoChat 2: No changes, but it’d be cool if Hazards Off still had the visuals in the background with no effect. Would also benefit from the starting stage feature maybe.
Mushroom Kingdom U: Fine how it is but would be nice to have the starting stage feature.
Mario Galaxy: Just for variety have Hazards off turn off the altered gravity. I don’t think anyone would use it though.
Mario Circuit: Would benefit greatly from the starting stage feature. Have Hazards off keep the starting stage the whole time without interference from the track.
Skyloft: Would benefit greatly from the starting stage feature. Some(including myself) would prefer to not have bottom platforms be a pass through.
The Great Cave Offensive: It’s too far gone.
Kalos Pokemon League: Would benefit from the starting stage feature.
Coliseum: Have the starting stage feature and have hazards off not keep the stage flat but keep the starting layout. In a perfect world Hazards Off would be the omega version from Sm4sh and have rising platforms.
Flat Zone X: Benefit from the starting stage feature.
Palutena’s Temple: It would be great if the starting stage feature allowed you to just pick individual parts of the stage.
Gamer: Would benefit greatly from the starting stage feature.
Garden of Hope: It’s fine, the starting stage feature in addition to hazards off could maybe allow you to pick and choose which breakable objects appear and the side platforms.
Town and City: It’s fine, maybe not have the platforms move more than once in Hazards off.
Wii Fit Studio: It’s fine.
Boxing Ring: It’s fine
Gaur Plain: I just wish I could play it’s music on more than one stage.
Duck Hunt: Some would prefer the tree platforms be gone and I’m not sure if hazards off gets rid of the covering grass, but it should if it doesn’t.
Wrecking Crew: It’s fine.
Pilot Wings: Would benefit greatly from the starting stage feature. Don’t have Hazards off only have the double platform red plane, have it be the flat one.
Wuhu Island: Would benefit greatly from the starting stage feature.
Windy Hill Zone: I can’t think of anything off the top of my head.
Wily Castle: Have Hazards Off just remove the Yellow Devil, the platforms make the stage interesting and unique. My most preferred situation would be to have it’s omega form from Sm4sh return, as that’s what Hazards Off is right now.
PAC-LAND: It’s too far gone.
Super Mario Maker: Would benefit very well from the starting stage feature.
Suzaku Castle: I do wish there was a way to play a stage with standard Street Fighter stage features. The closest thing we have to it is the Hazards Off version of Shadow Moses Island. I don’t want to get rid of the Omega version of Suzaku Castle, I do wish we had a stage with no platforms or lower area, un breakable walls(invisible or not) and a edgeless floor. A cool touch would be to have stage that is based off over many iconic Street Fighter stages, but it changes which one the stage is based off of depending on what you select using the starting stage feature. Having the size of the walls and floor change depending on how many fighters there are like the Omega stages would be nice too.
Midgar: Perhaps the starting stage feature could allow you to permanently have a summon on the stage. Hazards off would make some of them just be the default stage. With this you could have the stage be in water(no current), cut in half, and multiple different platform layouts when hazards are off.
Umbra Clock Tower: It’s fine.
New Donk City: Benefit from the starting stage feature.
Great Plateau Tower: Would benefit greatly from the starting stage feature. Having hazards off either allow the ceiling to be brake able and stay broken, have nothing above the main floor, or just the platform. With the single platform being the most preferred.
Moray Towers: Starting stage feature could have you pick between regular and Splatfest versions.
Dracula’s Castle: It’s Fine.
Edit#1: What I mean by Galaxy stretch plant is those round green shrubs from Super Mario Galaxy, that would launch if you hit them but would fly right back like a bungee cord. The move would act kinda Villager’s tree. Pressing D-B once would have Mario pluck out a shrub, then that would stay planted in the stage for a set period of time. Whenever the shrub is out Mario’s D-B would them be the Luma spin attack. The shrub would launch at different distances and getting hit by it would do different damages depending on what attack is used on it. The Mario that plucked the shrub will be able to haunt the shrub from coming back with his Luma spin. Everyone else has to avoid being hit by it by hitting it back like a gordo.
The Tenoki Leaf
sorry if I spelled it wrong). What I intended as the change for the Dair was the heavy statue.
I think Mario’s current move set is a little outdated considering he’s had the same move set since brawl, but the problem is by now if we updated him it would change his character entirely in smash.
