Hello everyone,

First post on these forums, apologize if this question has been answered before.

I plan on buying the 3DS version of smash bros, most of my friends own a 3DS and not a Wii U. They are excited about this game just as much as I am. My question is, will all my friends need their own copy of smash bros 3ds to play locally? I remember on the original DS I could play mario kart locally with friends who did not own the game. Will there be any chance of this? I hope so, it would be odd to require individual copies for 3ds, but Wii U inherently offers local play.

Whether or not it can play locally is up to Sakurai, the previous title have been used on a home console instead of a handheld, so we don't have a way of telling, unless Sakurai says so.

3DS download play is really good. Mario Party: Island Tour, for instance only requires one cartridge for four players.

It comes down to the amount of data that needs to be transferred, and it needn't all be at once. I suspect it would start by sending all necessary game data excluding model, texture and sound resources for individual stages and characters, and send those when they get picked.
