I noticed that you can play Smash Bros on the Local Wireless only, and I was wondering if there was a VPN connection between two networks if you could play with someone over the internet. Just a thought.

I don't know what you're trying to ask, but if you're curious if you could expand wireless into online, I doubt so.

I'm not sure what "local wireless" means. If it means that the two 3DS's are on the same wifi network, then a VPN could make it look like both of the 3DS's are on the same wifi network. Unless they connect via bluetooth.

They connect if they are close to each other.

Local wireless doesn't connect to the internet to connect to the other 3DS system nearby, it just connects to the other 3DS directly, so I don't really see how you could make it go through a VPN since it just searches for a 3DS system.

Well if it's on a standard network (tcp/ip) a VPN could make all the devices appear on the same network. Even on the same subnet. I guess the real question is how does the local wireless work.

I think it uses the IR sensors next to the cart slot.

In other words, it doesn't use Internet Protocol.

It's not exactly an impossible concept. Not sure on the specifics of the 3DS local play and the technicalities, but the PSP was able to play local games through manipulation of specific routers and tricking your PSP into thinking the router connected to the internet was another PSP. This made games like Monster Hunter "online" before they implemented it.

That's what I'm talking about! I don't know if you had a modded Xbox , but there was a program called Xbox Connect that allowed you to play local games over the internet. That is the concept I'm thinking of.
