smash and splatoon?

What is the relation with smash bros and splatoon? I just bought splatoon yesterday and i think it is extremely fun. But im just curious, like almost every smash player i seen on stream is now talking about splatoon, its been hyped up a ton on this site and with squidboards becoming a thing. But i find it a bit odd because splatoon is a shooter and smash is a fighting game, and both games are extremely different from each other so why are people who like smash suddenly so into splatoon?

It's one of the bigger releases for the Wii U, which Smash happens to be on. It's gotten pretty popular because it's different and fun, so of course people will talk about it. And since it's a shooter, there's gonna be a big community for it.

There's nothing to it. It happens with every major release. People were doing it before Smash came out too.
