Smash 4: Traction Rankings and Values

Indigo JeansHatsune Miku here again comin at y'all with another data table fresh outta the ovens

Values were derived with the following method:
  • A custom stage was created using the largest form available. A single, perfectly straight platform was created with the second texture, to give uniform blocks with which to measure distance
    • Straightness was tested by generating a rolling cart on the platform
  • Traction with Bunny Hood was calculated
    • In training with speed set to 1/4 (Hold L), Luigi was given a Bunny Hood. I dashed into a full run, and then released the analogue stick when I determined he was centered above a line. He was then allowed to skid to completion, and the distance covered was recorded (11.25 blocks)
  • Traction value and skid distance have an inverse relationship (the lower your traction value, the farther you skid)
    • Traction = 1/n
  • Bunny Hood's traction multiplier was estimated
    • The same process that was used to calculate Bunny Hood traction was carried out, though without a Bunny Hood. The distance covered by the skid was recorded (3.75 blocks)
    • Traction was calculated
      • The percent decrease from the standard traction value to the Bunny Hood traction value was calculated
  • A Bunny Hood decreases traction by roughly 66.67%. In other words, Bunny Hood traction is 1/3 of standard traction
  • Finally, characters were tested in training mode using the same process that was used to calculate Bunny Hood traction
    • The number of blocks traveled was counted
  • True Traction = (1/n)*3

|Greninja|0.35294
|Luigi|0.26667

This time around, for Miis, I'm only going to test for short+thin, standard+standard, and tall+wide. In general, shorter, thinner Miis have lower traction.

Stuff in parentheses before a character means that that stat/attribute change does not affect their traction in a discernible way (Lightweight Palutena has the same traction as non-Lightweight Palutena).

Hey Miku, I asked this not long ago to some other very informative poster but since you are already doing this kind of analysis it might be easier for you.

Is there a way to measure initial dash length and initial dash speed? I am looking for the character with the closest values to Melee Mewtwo's initial dash length, speed and traction in order to practice some different movement techniques and sort of "get used" to timings and spacing before he is released.

Are these analysis you were plannig to do in the future? Should I just wait patiently?

I could probably measure both max dash distance and dash speed using the Speed Crasher Protection Badge and balancing out the stat changes, but to be honest it wouldn't do much good. There is no reliable way to compare it against Mewtwo's values, since those were derived by hard-datamining. They use the objective units the game uses, while the values I get would be subjective. For example, one person measures how fast a horse ran by measuring the meters it ran, and timing it in seconds. Another person measures the distance in something like strides of a grown man's legs, and times it in blinks of an eye. That's sort of what's going on here, except there's really no way to see how many strides of a grown man's legs are in a meter, or how many blinks of an eye are in a second. Like, in Brawl, Link has a running speed of 1.328. Um... 1.328 what? And even if we know what the units are (it's probably BDU/frame), it's difficult to compare that against something in Smash 4 due to uncertainty in model scaling.

Yea I understand those concepts (specially since I program games myself and I use arbitrary units of measure I make up myself for my own formulas all the time). It still would be good to have a list of "ranks". If anything Mewtwo was really close to IC and Ness in Melee but IC are now removed and Ness was changed a lot in Brawl. Though, if the Brawl values are similar to the Melee ones then Yoshi should probably be the closest match to Mewtwo (since he was changed in Brawl) but then again, Yoshi seems to have been changed so much this game. So honestly I don't think I would be able to compare it to anything (Plus Mewtwo will probably be changed too).

Thanks anyways for the conclusion. If you do make the comparisons between characters be sure to let me know. I am still interested in knowing.
