Smash 4, a reboot?

First off, I would like you to know that I still didn't get to try the game, therefore I'm basing my thoughts on the heavy load of Smash 4 videos/material I watched/read.

You know, there are a lot of details here and there that lead me to think that the upcoming game is kinda willing to remind us of the 64 days. The little spark while fastfalling, the result screen music, some details on some characters, and even some phrases in the main theme score. Out of curiosity, I removed dust from my 64 game and tried to look if I can recognize some similarities with Smash 4.

Actually, isn't Smash 64's pace/speed between Brawl and Melee? And did you also notice that shielding while dashing stops you as in 64, like in Smash 4?

I know the game will yet have to deal with some modification before the release, so it is only food for thoughts.

What do you guys think?

With a game like smash broa, you can't really reboot because all of the games are so similar gameplay wise but I DO see what you mean and kinda agree actually c:

Indeed, a properly speaking 'reboot' is impossible due to the evolution of the series. My approach was more about the spirit and the developpers' axis of developement, about how we should think of the game as a whole.

It's look like it's going to the "fun" side...
For me, the 64 one was the funniest, it's the smash that have a high quantity of humor to me...

Yeah I agree, it's probably going back to its roots, but reboot or not, I'll still enjoy Smash 3DS / Wii U.

I personally feel like the "child play" element and feel of the first game is being brought back in Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS with Amiibo. I mean, I know some people don't really like Amiibo or think it's useless, but you still need to remember that the games are still marketed towards children. If you truly think what Smash Bros. and Amiibo is going to bring to the table, it's actually very amazing.

The Amiibo is an interesting case. It seems advertised towards children but priced towards adults with well paying jobs. Also add in the fact you'll have to pre-order the Amiibo to have any chance to get them anywhere near the launch day. This makes them a very strange choice indeed.

Yes! A whole new dimension! Plus the customizable moves makes it feel more Pokémon-ish ... Which is awesome I think. Think of all the sales they'll make.

And again, as you pointed out, Smash 64 was ridiculously fun to play. Hopefully they kept this in mind.

The marketing and design has been constructed to have the broadest appeal possible so the fact that it looks like a very general game instead of a specific series entry can make it seem like it is a reboot.

To be honest I've been thinking Smash 4 is so much like 64 lately. I'm glad I wasn't the only obe seeing it feel like it was going back to its roots.
