When is it too early to start discussing rule set for smash 4?

Of course we can't know things like:
-legitimacy of custom move sets
- legal stages
-Should "X" character be

What we can discuss what direction the community wants the game be played at a competitive level.
We know from previous game what rule sets promote camping/ running away. We should have some clear goal I know this will help me and other tournament organizers out when planning the first smash 4 tournament.

There's always some speculation stuff you could do to make things more easier for you in some regards (like checking out the multiple custom move threads, with "Customizable Movesets: Yes, Customizable Attributes: No" being a highlight). You could also start talking about which stages seem more viable than others as well. I'm not really for banning things from the get go, and there will no doubt be a stage discussion list when the game comes out, but I think talking about stages beforehand could really help give us some insight before the games comes out if we actually research them in depth.

Also something weird to consider is the whole battery life thing. I haven't noticed anything, but does having your 3DS plugged in interfere with the wireless capabilities of it? Also, what if in some event you run out of battery before a match? How long is the grace period for you to find a charger if you didn't bring one yourself. Should "bring your own charger" be implied for 3DS tournaments, much like "bring your own controller" for games past?

What do you mean by "Should 'X' character be"?

Talking about how many stocks to be used and what time limit would be good too, but I have no idea as to that haha. But I think a speculative ruleset thread is a really good idea. Props to you for the day!:)

It's not early anymore. The game is coming out soon in like what, 43 days in Japan?
The game's competitive level will be the same as the previous Smash games. You know, the standard no Items, 3 stock, legal stages and stuff. However, I think the 3DSA group wants the competitive scene for this game to be more liberal with stages and customization.
If camping is a big issue, then there will be a lot of discussion about it to the point that in the end, it will be limited.
I think that the 3DS scene as a whole should agree with one ruleset. Tournaments using custom moves can be side events, but they could be used for the main ones. It'll provide a greater depth of the game, so why not?

TimeSmash brought up bring your own charger. Is it to be assumed that people can't share 3DSs? I know it will happen at early tournaments.

I hope there will be custom moves in tournaments! Custom moves will really reflect someones play style.

Not they won't, they'll reflect whatever the best moveset is (which they managed to copy off smashboards).
Only in the long run. Until then, while people are actually having fun with the game, it will reflect a person's playstyle or what they think works best. We don't want Smash to turn into Smogon.

The sad true. Custom movesets will be likely Pokémon movesets, people will just copy what they read here, like Pokémon players copy Smogon "builds".

Smogon is a reflection of what any game becomes like at a competitive level.
I've gotta disagree, because I don't see other games banning counterable moves just because they make it more luck-based than it already is.

With any luck there'll be some player who plays a subpar setup and makes up for it with sheer skill.

I just hope there will be more generally accepted competitive stages. I mean I like Battlefield and Final Destination, but not for every match.

Yeah, I'm not a great competitive guy, but when I've watched tournaments I get bored of those stages quick.

The final destination forms of all stages seems like it might help with that though. That's not ONLY for Online Glory mode right? Like, you can choose which final destination version to play on?

I think your right. Otherwise what would be the point of have final destination versions for almost every stage?

Satisfying the competitive guys lol

Smogon is a reflection of what any game becomes like at a competitive level.

Not to derail here, but banning things like evading moves, overpowered tactics and instant, nigh uncounterable one-shot moves seems logical.

We really need to see more of other character's custom moves to really know for sure if they'll be allowed or not. You guys do have to remember that you have to unlock the customization options too, so if you don't have all of them for each character there's really no point in sharing 3DSes. Not to mention we have Palutena and Mii Fighters who's moves SIGNIFICANTLY change with each customization option.
As for the other characters though, I really don't know. I can almost imagine Custom and Non-Custom movesets being separated at tourneys almost like Team Battles and Singles. The fact that even Sakurai Himself made it so that you can't use Custom Movesets in 'With Anyone' mode online kind of makes me think they may be better off set to their defaults though.

If custom movesets are legal the SBR will become the smogon of smash bros. ..And I will ignore them and use stupid gimmicky sets just to tick people off.

What if they ban your favorite moves because it has a luck factor that can be played around by dodging the move? What will you do then? :rotfl:

I'll probably use mostly default sets in general, unless there are things I can do to "fix" moves like getting rid of that stupid Gale Boomerang.

Absolutely. I didn't mean to imply there's anything wrong with the Smogon approach. I was merely stating that when a game becomes competitive but wasn't necessarily created as such (or at least not 100%), that is what happens. I like it, some people don't.
