side smash for edgeguarding

Has anyone tried using Snake's side smash as an edge guarding technique? If so how successful were you guys in pulling it off?

What I do is once you opponent is off the stage and trying to recover, do a mortar slide to the edge of the platform to get there quickly, once your at edge perform a forward smash and hold then wait and release at just the moment before your opponent gets invincibility frames for grabbing the edge. It's very situational and requires predicting how your opponent recovers but I believe it's not a bad method and an alternative to nikitas.

I find the timing of it pretty difficult but occasionally i get it right. Anyone have any tips on when to release the forward smash?

I've only just begun to use it recently with low-moderate success; I managed it to pull it off once at a tournament against a very good wolf player and KO'd him at about 50% damage about 15 seconds into the fight. Needless to say he wasn't very impressed

Well the Fsmash would be a pretty good edgeguard if it wasn't so laggy and hit more below the edge. Problem is that most characters can just auto sweet spot from below and avoid getting hit. I could see this working on someone like Wario if he has to Upb and can't perfectly space himself from the edge but otherwise I think this would be too situational of an edgeguard to use consistently.

yeah, characters with auto sweet spot you easily avoid this, but ones such as wario, wolf sometimes (if he misses) and a few other characters (peach maybe?) could be wrecked by this

large chars like bowser and DK who recover horizontally are vunerable to this. A throw off the edge at 0% and a fsmash to guard can KO these chars.

It's actually somewhat effective against other Snakes. Try charging it up if you press it too early, although it does give away what your doing and for example Fox can Shine just below the stage and recover easily (I've done it several times against edge guarding).

Fact is, its not a effective ledgeguard due to the auto sweet spotting, and the blast radius is much more precious then you may think. There are so many more options for ledge guarding then using the fsmash.

But still, it can work sometimes. People already listed a few characters above who don't have such large auto sweet spots, making it much easier to nail them with a rpg in the face. If you set up the edge with tons of explosives and stand back a little, the opponent might be stupid enough to climb up on the ledge and be surprised with a bang from your fsmash.

I still try it sometimes, chances are they will most likely die due to its amazing knockback, the opponent is so close to the fray, even at low percents, they will die because of this.

I've pulled this off against good players before. Best edgeguarding IMO is the USmash spam. This one works well when you're desperate for a kill since you're losing.

Whenever I'm winning, I do a taunt and edgeguard that way. =D

yeah with the auto sweet spotting it makes this move useless in most situations however if on the rare occasion that your opponent 'overjumps' the ledge then this move might work well.

I've been having low success rates at edge guarding with the nikita and up smash spamming. I'm also not confident of snake's aerial abilities to take them out that way (although most can agree there are few things that are more rewarding than landing that perfect forward aerial spike).

I'll get around to trying this f smash edge guard more on computers/real opponents when I get the chance. See which characters are vulnerable to this.

It's not exactly a move to abuse. It might work depending on the situation, but I rely more on Snake's tilts to KO things.
