Hey guys, I'm pretty new to smashboards and totally a newb at smash. Today I played in my first smash 64 tournament and won first place! I'm not posting this to brag because I know from experience that there isn't a single active member on smashboards who couldn't 5 stock me. The reason I'm posting this is just to say thank you to everyone for creating this friendly and knowledgable community that I've been using so much in the past weeks. I would never have even entered the tournament if not for all the work you guys put into creating threads and helping newer players like me.

Thanks everyone,

Nate

Oh yeah, I was getting better slowly before I used smashboards, but after I got an account my skill level seems to be getting much better everyday. I look at my old games on my comp and I feel like I am going to throw up. Super-helpful people here thats for sure.

Ugh, I can relate to this too much.

Great to hear what Smashboards has done for you! It has done the same and more for most of us.

Keep on keepin' on!

I guess I'm just different from everyone else. I didn't improve that much even after consistent interaction with the community. I just learned a couple of tricks here and there.

I thought z-cancelling was only applicable to Link's dair until I started using smashboards. Also didn't realize that short-hopping was something you could do on demand rather than just getting lucky. Obviously information like that is huge.

I do sort of wish the character specific sections were a little more useful though. I feel like I am pretty isolated in my skill level on smashboards though so the things I'm am looking for wouldn't be useful to anyone else. But I guess I can just find someone good who mains whatever char I'm trying to pick up and learn it from them.

Yeah I own the top one and play online a few times a week. You're right it is a big help.

I'm a very analytically minded person when it comes to learning so, although experience trumps all, I find it very uncomfortable to solely learn by doing. There is some information that people in this community assume everyone knows, and rightly so (because pretty much everyone except for me knows it).

For example, it would have taken me a long time to discover the power jiggly's nair just by playing. The fact that someone told me jiggly = dair + nair was a great help, albeit a vast oversimplification. Obviously I know she isn't limited to those moves but it gives me a general sense of how to play her.

I would love if there was a few paragraphs on each character written with the intent to teach someone new to that character their strongest and most often used moves. Maybe some basic combos as well. But like I said, everyone except for me already knows them all.

I'll just get back to playing online then...

Sorry for all the rambling.

there are actually a couple guides that have a breakdown of each character's moves and then says which ones *tend* to work the best. i don't have a link for the one i'm talking about in particular since i'm on my work cpu but when i get home i'll post it.

also, i forget who created it (aa?) but they said it was outdated. while outdated, it does give you a solid base to work from.

EDIT: quick google search did the trick - http://www.gamefaqs.com/n64/198854-super-smash-bros/faqs/55926

I read most of this when I first started to learn the game and it did help

Just remember that online isn't the same as console. I think my online play has helped my console play a bit, but my console play has helped my online play even more (cuz from my experience, the most effective techniques are discovered on console).

it's on gamefaqs and it's pending, it'll be up in a day i presume

but someone who knows so much about the game, including absolutely everything about everyone's recovery, would hardly need it, right?

she's from touhou, which is a lot more than just a game...it's a phenomenon on a greater scale than like, pokemon (but only in japan)

that combination of characters is because they're both gluttons and both associatd with the colour pink, i guess

I'm not a huge fan of the character (it's all about Byakuren) I just thought the mix of 2hu and Nintendo was nice or something

Pink headers? And the conversation was pretty much done but OK. Maybe one of us should start it up again just to spite you :troll:

OT: I think I successfully manipulated Tom Bombadil into becoming an unwitting servant to the Empire of the Stars. Right bro?

I'm not totally sure what the Empire of the Stars is or what it does but I suppose if I am an unwitting servant then that would only follow.

...

So yes
