Should we have a more comprehensive tutorial for beginners?

I meant to make this thread a long time ago but better late than never, right?

Some of you have probably heard of Maximillian and his channel Miles923 on youtube. He frequently puts out videos featuring fighting games and discusses fgc news. Upon Melee's victory in the breast cancer drive, he put up a video marking the event and brought up a very interesting topic at about 4 and a half minutes in:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=60O5rscOfuY#t=275s

This then got me thinking, after 10 years, why isn't there an in-depth, beginner to high level play tutorial? Why is this community more like an exclusive club where you essentially have to teach yourself everything in order to get good? Let's face it, Melee is old and with SSB4 around the corner, the community is probably going to shrink if we don't try and take advantage of the exposure Evo will give us.

So essentially, the point I am getting at is I think we should make a comprehensive, episodic, video tutorial for beginners. I have recording equipment, passable smash skills, and quite a bit of free time so I am essentially prepared to make it. Clearly no one else was about to anyway. However, I would like some community feedback on the structure.

Some Essential Questions:
1. Should we even bother making a tutorial?

2. What kind of video format would be best? Is voiceover better, is brevity better, how organized should it be?
I think a solid example of a good fighting game tutorial series would be the MvC Hyper Guide (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDIa_k2foF0) however, I think going a bit more in depth would service the smash community more.

3. How "beginner level of play" should we be targetting in the initial episodes? i.e. explaining controls and the names of moves

4. Should parts be funny, sarcastic? Would that hurt the video?

Wak's videos, while well made, serves mostly to explain how to perform advanced techniques and offers little in terms of fundamentals or explanation for dynamic gameplay aspects like edgeguarding/recovery or approaching. Someone trying to learn the game being directed to Wak's AHTP videos would be like a piano teacher teaching their student how to perform some complex finger movement before explaining where middle c is or what chords are.

Of course, we in the smash community forget how horribly unaccessible this game is... because it we so long ago when we had to teach ourselves. Most players probably gained their skills and knowledge via trial and error through playing or scavenging bits of information between this site and the wikis.

These are all solid points, I'll be sure to bring them up next meeting.

The guide should have expanded on hitlag, shield stun, SDI, ASDI, and I'm sure there are other things I can't think of right now. There is nothing wrong with including theory because generally coming up with an all encompassing statement regard a situation just involves having access to the right data.

^exactly. I said a long time ago that finding super basic information that is usually taken for granted on this site is incredibly hard. Stuff like DI for anyone new is impossible to find without searching through this site for a buried thread. Searching on google however leads to misinformation on the wiki.

Wak's videos are good, but we could use a stickied guide on stuff like wave dashing as well as shield mechanics without becoming another everything thread where everything imaginable is said...even finding that thread is a chore for anyone who knows it exists, imagine if you didn't know what dash dancing was.

You'd probably make a thread asking about it.

I am a very new player to melee, long time brawl player but looking for something more competitive, balanced, and better combos/techs kill. im mostly looking to learn it for project M and occasional local melee tournaments, also to woop my friends who play casually and dont know any AT`s at all.

A lot of the stuff i seen for melee is talking to advanced players, since im new to the game, looking at some of the stuff here seems a bit overwhelming. Im trying to learn the basic advanced stuff of melee at a slow pace so a nice guide for beginners getting into advanced play, cutting out anything too advanced would be nice. Just the basic stuff to slowly take me melee game to the next level.
